''Life in the Citadel'' ( et, Elu tsitadellis) is a 1947 Estonian drama and war film directed by Herbert Rappaport and based on the novel of the same name by August Jakobson. This film was the first film which was made in Soviet Estonia. Herbert Rappaport
Herbert Rappaport (1908–1983), known in the Soviet Union as Gerbert Moritsevich Rappaport, was an Austrian-Soviet screenwriter and film director. Rappaport was born in 1908 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, to Jewish parents from Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). From 1927 to 1929 he studied law at University of Vienna. Rappaport worked as screenwriter, music editor, and assistant director in Austria, Germany, and the United States from 1928 onward. During the early 1930s he worked as an assistant to Georg Wilhelm Pabst. In 1936 he was officially invited to the Soviet Union to internationalize the Soviet Cinema which he accepted and spent the following 40 years working as a filmmaker there. Among Rappaport's best known films is an adaptation of Dmitri Shostakovich's ''Cheryomushki'' ("Cherry Town") (1963). Eduard Tinn
Eduard Tinn (18 January 1899 Hummuli Parish – 27 March 1968 Tallinn) was an Estonian actor and theatre director. Tinn passed the examinations of as an assistant pharmacist at the Imperial Academy of Military Medicine in Saint Petersburg in 1917. He then studied pharmacy at the University of Tartu between 1917 and 1918 and was front-line pharmacist from 1919 and 1920 during the Estonian War of Independence. In 1927, he graduated from Drama Studio's theatre school in Tallinn. From 1927 until 1932, and from 1944 until 1968, he was an actor in Estonian Drama Theatre. Between 1932 and 1934, he was an actor in Estonia Theatre. From 1936 until 1940, he was the head of Ugala Theatre. Besides stage roles he played also in several films and radio theatre. His son was actor Olev Tinn. Kaarel Ird (27 August 1909 Riga – 25 December 1986 Viljandi) was a Soviet and Estonian theatre leader, director and actor. His theatrical career started in 1932 in Pärnu Töölisteater. Since 1940 he worked at Vanemuine Theatre, being most of time its stage manager, but in the meantime also its head. 1963-1971 and 1980–1985, he was a deputy of Supreme Soviet of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. Meta Luts (5 September 1905 – 1 July 1958) was an Estonian actress. Known mostly for her appearances on stage, she also performed in radio theatre and appeared in several films. Her career spanned nearly forty years. Early life and education Meta Luts was born in the rural municipality of Riidaja in Valga County to parents Andres and Juuli Mari Luts (''née'' Gentalen).
