Else Schøtt
Else Marie Schøtt (24 March 1895 – 29 April 1989) was a Danish operatic soprano who performed at the Royal Danish Theatre from 1919 until she retired from the stage in 1951. Initially she frequently stood in for Tenna Kraft but became increasingly recognized as a significant performer in her own right, taking key roles in the works of Mozart, Verdi and Wagner as well in several Danish operas. In 1941, she played the title role in Paul von Klenau's Danish première of ''Elisabeth von England'' to wide acclaim. Schøtt was also a successful teacher, with pupils including Ruth Guldbæk and Tove Hyldgaard. Biography Born in Middelfart on 24 March 1895, Else Marie Schøtt was the daughter of the innkeeper Jacob Peter Schøtt (1864–1917) and his wife Joanne Henriette née Lund (1859–1942). Tannhäuser (opera)
''Tannhäuser'' (; full title , "Tannhäuser and the Minnesängers' Contest at Wartburg") is an 1845 opera in three acts, with music and text by Richard Wagner ( WWV 70 in the catalogue of the composer's works). It is based on two German legends: Tannhäuser, the mythologized medieval German Minnesänger and poet, and the tale of the Wartburg Song Contest. The story centres on the struggle between sacred and profane love, as well as redemption through love, a theme running through most of Wagner's work. The opera remains a staple of major opera house repertoire in the 21st century. Tagea Brandt Rejselegat
The Tagea Brandts ''Rejselegat'' (Travel Scholarship) is a Danish award to women who have made a significant contribution in science, literature or art. The grant, which is given without application, was created and endowed by Danish industrialist Vilhelm Brandt (1854–1921) in 1905 in honor of his wife, Tagea Brandt. It is awarded annually on 17 March, her birthday. The charter of 1922 provides that it shall be given to outstanding women in science, art, music, literature and theater arts (particularly in this case to actresses at the Royal Danish Theatre). The intent is for the awardee to both broaden her horizons while promoting Danish society abroad, and to benefit from vacation and rest time. The first scholarships were given in 1924; the first time the amount was DKK 10.000, in 1958 it was increased to DKK 15.000, in 1967 to 25.000, later to 50,000, and currently it is DKK 75.000, which usually is given to 2-3 women annually. Kongelige Kammersangere or The Royal Chamber Singer is a prestigious award given to Danish Opera singers by the monarch. Only about 50 people have received the award since it was started in 1700. The first non-native Danish person who was appointed as a royal chamber singer was the Italian Giuseppe Siboni, who in 1819 received Danish citizenship and became director of the Royal Theatre. Christian X Of Denmark
Christian X ( da, Christian Carl Frederik Albert Alexander Vilhelm; 26 September 1870 – 20 April 1947) was King of Denmark from 1912 to his death in 1947, and the only King of Iceland as Kristján X, in the form of a personal union rather than a real union between 1918 and 1944. He was a member of the House of Glücksburg, a branch of the House of Oldenburg, and the first monarch since King Frederick VII born into the Danish royal family; both his father and his grandfather were born as princes of a ducal family from Schleswig. Among his siblings was King Haakon VII of Norway. His son became Frederick IX of Denmark. His character has been described as authoritarian and he strongly stressed the importance of royal dignity and power. ''Drot og marsk'' (''King and Marshal'') is an opera by the Danish composer Peter Heise. The libretto, by Christian Richardt, is based on Carsten Hauch's play ''Marsk Stig'' (1850). The opera was first performed at the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, on 25 September 1878. Roles Synopsis The opera is based on the true story of the murder of the Danish king Eric V of Denmark, Eric Glipping in 1286. The king is an inveterate womaniser and when he seduces Ingeborg, the wife of Stig Andersen Hvide, Marshal Stig, the marshal organises a conspiracy to kill him.
