Else Freiin von Richthofen (October 8, 1874 - December 22, 1973) was among the early female social scientists in Germany. Life and career Elisabeth Helene Amalie Sophie Freiin (Baroness) von Richthofen (also known as Else Jaffé) was born into the German nobility at Château-Salins (France). Her father was Friedrich Ernst Emil Ludwig Freiherr von Richthofen (1844-1915), an engineer in the Imperial German Army, and Anna Elise Lydia Marquier (1852-1930). While Else von Richthofen started her professional career as a teacher, she enrolled at Heidelberg University at a time when this was still very unusual for women; she was one of just four female students at the time. She earned a doctorate in economics in 1901 and started to work as a labour inspector in Karlsruhe. Else Ury (1 November 1877 – 13 January 1943) was a German-Jewish novelist and children's book author. Her best-known character is the blonde doctor's daughter Annemarie Braun, whose life from childhood to old age is told in the ten volumes of the highly successful ''Nesthäkchen'' series. The books, the six-part TV series '' Nesthäkchen'' (1983), based on the first three volumes, as well as the new DVD edition (2005) caught the attention of millions of readers and viewers. During Ury's lifetime ''Nesthäkchen und der Weltkrieg'' (''Nesthäkchen and the World War''), the fourth volume, was the most popular. Else Ury was a member of the German ''Bürgertum'' (middle class). Else Seifert (9 December 1879 – 23 June 1968) was a German architectural photographer and teacher from Dresden. Biography Else Seifert was born in Dresden in 1879 to Karl Robert Seifert, a merchant, and Klara Amalie Juliane (née Schiertz). She was educated at the Fröbelseminar in Kassel and completed a brief training in accounting. She worked as a private tutor in Kassel for three years and then worked in the commercial sector for ten years. In 1909 she returned to Dresden and began teaching at the Städtischen Mädchengewerbe- und Handelsschule (Municipal Girls' Industry and Trade School), where she worked until 1924. Else Meidner
Else Meidner (born Else Meyer; 2 September 1901 – 7 May 1987) was a German-Jewish painter. Biography Meidner was born in Berlin and studied there between 1918 and 1925 before spending two years in Cologne. In 1927 she married the painter Ludwig Meidner and they emigrated to England in August 1939. There Else Meidner worked as a domestic. After World War II the couple drifted apart, both emotionally and artistically and Ludwig returned to Germany in 1952 while Else stayed in London. Else Mayer (1891–1962) was a German nun and women's liberation activist during the period of first-wave feminism. She was one of the pioneers of the German Women's Liberation Movement. Together with Alexandra Bischoff she founded the Erlöserbund. Biography Else Mayer was the daughter of the German jeweler Victor Mayer. She spent her childhood and youth in the family business before she became a nun. After she visited several nunneries, she decided to open her own, Erlöserbund, in 1916. With the support of her family, she bought buildings in Bonn and started to support young female students who received housing from her. Erlöserbund was closed in 2005 and reorganized as a charitable foundation.
