Elsa Sjunneson
Elsa Sjunneson (born 1985) is an American speculative fiction writer, editor, media critic, and disability rights activist. She is a Hugo Award and Aurora Award winner through her editorial work on ''Uncanny Magazine''. Deafblind since birth, Sjunneson writes and speaks extensively about the representation of disabilities in popular culture. Biography Elsa Sjunneson was born in 1985. She was born with congenital rubella syndrome, resulting in hearing loss, cataracts in both eyes, and a heart defect. She is legally blind and wears a prosthetic eye and bilateral hearing aids. She attended Gonzaga University, earning a bachelor's degree in history in 2008. While at Gonzaga she worked to raise awareness for FACE AIDS. Sjunneson went on to earn a master's degree in women's history from Sarah Lawrence College in 2011. Gonzaga University
Gonzaga University (GU) () is a private Jesuit university in Spokane, Washington. It is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Founded in 1887 by Joseph Cataldo, an Italian-born priest and Jesuit missionary, the university is named after the young Jesuit saint Aloysius Gonzaga. ''Niekas'' (from Lithuanian: ''nothing'' or ''nobody'') was a science fiction fanzine published from 1962–1998 by Ed Meskys – also spelled ''Meškys'' – of New Hampshire. It won the 1967 Hugo Award for Best Fanzine, and was nominated two other times, losing in 1966 to ''ERB-dom'' and in 1989 to ''File 770''. For the initial five issues, Meskys – at the time a professor and a member of The Tolkien Society at the now-defunct Belknap College in Center Harbor, New Hampshire – edited ''Niekas'' by himself, after which he was joined by Felice Rolfe and Anne Chatland. The British Fantasy Awards (BFA) are awarded annually by the British Fantasy Society (BFS), first in 1976. Prior to that they were known as The August Derleth Fantasy Awards (see August Derleth Award). Aurora Award For Best Related Work
The Aurora Awards are granted annually by the Canadian SF and Fantasy Association and SFSF Boreal Inc. The Award for Best Related Work (French: ''Autre oeuvre''), was first recognized in 1983 as a separate category from Best Long-Form and was first granted in 1989 as the Award for Best Other Work (French: ''Réalisation autre'') one granted to an English-language work and one to a French-language work. In 1999 it changed its name to Best Work (Other), and when the Prix Aurora and Prix Boreal combined, the awards adopted the name Best Related Work in 2012. In 1983, two non-fiction works were recognized separately from other works, but neither were given an award. The French Award was not granted several times in 2003, 2005 and 2008 as there were insufficient entries.
