Charles Richard Elrington
Charles Richard Elrington (1787–1850) was a Church of Ireland cleric and academic, regius professor of divinity in the Trinity College Dublin. Life The elder son of Thomas Elrington, Bishop of Ferns and Leighlin and Charlotte Preston, he was born in Dublin on 25 March 1787, and was educated at home by a private tutor. Having entered Trinity College Dublin, 3 November 1800, under the tutorship of the Rev. Dr. Davenport, and having gained all the honours of his class, he was awarded the gold medal in 1806 for his term examinations. In the same year he gained Bishop Law's mathematical premium, and in 1806 the primate's Hebrew prize. He graduated B.A. in 1805, M.A. 1811, B.D. 1816, and D.D. 1820. In 1810 he was elected a fellow of his college, having obtained the Madden premium in the three preceding years. Christopher Robin Elrington FRHistS FSA (20 January 1930 – 3 August 2009) was an English historian, known primarily for his work with the ''Victoria County History''. Biography Elrington was born in Farnborough, as the second of three sons of Brigadier Maxwell Elrington, and his wife Beryl. Christopher's father died in active service in Germany, while the son was 15. Elrington was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire, before performing his military service. He later went to University College, Oxford, where he took a BA. After this he did his MA in medieval history at Bedford College, University of London. In 1954 Elrington started working for the ''Victoria County History''. The projectan attempt to build a comprehensive history of all the counties of Englandwas at this time in a phase of revival, after having been dormant since the time of the First World War. Major William Sandys Elrington (1780–1860) was a British military officer, veteran of the Peninsula War, and colonial settler of New South Wales, Australia. He is associated with the locality of Farringdon and the village of Majors Creek, both near Braidwood. Family background, early life and military career Elrington was born in Devon. He was the eighth child of Captain Thomas Elrington (1722—1809), at the time of Elrington's birth commander of a company of the Corps of Invalids at the Royal Citadel at Plymouth, and his wife Rebecca (1742—1823) née Goodall. Elrington came from a long line of soldiers, and was descended—at least, so he believed—from William the Conqueror. His father had fought in both the suppression of the Jacobite rising of 1745, at Culloden, and in the Seven Years War in North America.
