Elliott Colla
Elliott Colla is an American scholar of the Middle East, specializing in Arabic literature and culture. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University. Career Colla received a B.A. from University of California, Berkeley in 1989 and his Ph.D. in Comparative literature as from Berkeley in 2000. His translation of ''Gold Dust'' was runner-up for the Banipal Prize in 2009. He is a co-editor of the e-zine, ''Jadaliyya''. Idris Ali
Idris Ali (1940 – November 30, 2010) was an Egyptian author of Nubian origin. Early life He was born in Aswan in Upper Egypt and studied at Al-Azhar University. He published his first story in 1969, and eventually wrote six novels and three short story collections. Among his best-known works are ''Dongola'' and ''Poor'', both of which have been published in English by the AUC Press, in translations by Peter Theroux and Elliot Colla respectively. Theroux’s translation of ''Dongola'' received the Arkansas Arabic Translation Award in 1997. Career Idris Ali's work dealt largely with life in his native Nubia. He was a strong voice against the poverty and deprivation suffered by the Nubian people, and he protested against the loss of native land caused by the building of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s and 70s. Rabai Madhoun
Rabai al-Madhoun (born 1945) is a Palestinian journalist, novelist and writer. He was born in the village of al-Majdal in British Mandatory Palestine, near Ashkelon in present-day Israel. His family was driven out of Palestine in the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight. Madhoun grew up in the refugee camp of Khan Younis located in the Gaza Strip. He went to Alexandria University for higher education, and in 1973 turned to journalism as a career. He was also involved with the Palestinian liberation struggle in the 1970s as a member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, but quit politics in 1980 to focus on writing full-time. As a journalist, he worked in Beirut (Lebanon),Nicosia (Cyprus) and later on in London where he is now based. Currently a British citizen, Madhoun is an editor at the ''Al-Sharq Al-Awsat'' newspaper. Ibrahim Al-Koni
Ibrāhīm al-Kōnī (sometimes translated as Ibrāhīm Kūnī) ( ar, ابراهيم الكوني) is a Libyan writer and is considered to be one of the most prolific Arab novelists. Biography Born in 1948 in the Fezzan Region, Ghadamis City, Ibrahim Kuni was brought up on the tradition of the Tuareg people, Tuareg, popularly known as "the veiled men" or "the blue men." Mythological elements, spiritual quest and existential questions mingle in the writings of Kuni who has been hailed as magical realist, Sufi fabulist and poetic novelist. He spent his childhood in the desert and learned to read and write Arabic when he was twelve. Kuni studied literature and journalism at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow and worked as a journalist in Moscow and Warsaw.
