Elliott is a small, hilly neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's West End Region. History Beginning as a portion of the now-defunct Township of Chartiers and existing for a brief time as an independent borough, Elliott was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in two pieces; the southern half in 1906 and the northern half in 1921. Elliott grew quickly during this time as a dense and thriving residential community, due to its proximity to downtown Pittsburgh and direct access to several arterial roads and streetcar lines. Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School (also known as Thaddeus Stevens School, and Pittsburgh Stevens K-8) is located at 824 Crucible Street in the Elliott neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was added to the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks in 2001, and the List of City of Pittsburgh historic designations on November 30, 1999. History and architectural features Built in 1939, this historic school was a part of the Pittsburgh Public Schools and served the Elliott, Esplen, Sheraden, West End, and Westgate Village neighborhoods. The school was designed by Marion M. Steen (1886–1966) in the Art Deco style and was named in honor of Republican abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens, who was a U.S. Congressman from Pennsylvania. Sheraden (Pittsburgh)
Sheraden is a neighborhood in the West End of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the United States. Nearby neighborhoods include Windgap, Chartiers City, Crafton Heights, Esplen, and Elliott. The neighborhood was named for William Sheraden, a settler who gave land for the construction of a railroad depot in exchange for the naming rights. Sheraden's original homestead still stands at 2803 Bergman Street, easily distinguished for the two sycamore trees which grow together to form an arch, a legacy of Sheraden's horticulturalist grandson. Originally incorporated as Sheraden Borough in 1894, it grew quickly and was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in 1907. Shortly thereafter, the Public School Board of Pittsburgh opened numerous educational facilities around Sheraden, including Langley High School, completed in 1923, which replaced the former borough's Riverview High School. Westwood is a neighborhood in the West End Region of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Beginning as a part of the now-defunct Township of Chartiers and existing for a short time as an independent borough, Westwood was annexed by the City of Pittsburgh in three pieces: the eastern third in 1872, and the remaining sectors progressing west in 1921 and 1927. Westwood is a quiet residential community inhabited by a large variety of residents, and exhibits an eclectic mix of architectural styles that span many periods. Among these is the John Frew House, one of the oldest surviving structures west of the Allegheny Mountains, which dates (in its original form) to 1790. Westwood also contains a public primary school bearing the community's name, as well as a public swimming pool, a playground, and ballfields. West End Village (originally named Temperanceville) is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's west city area. The Steps of Pittsburgh refers to the collection of nearly 800 sets of city-owned steps in the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States. Many steps parallel existing roads, but others exist on their own and are classified as city streets and are commonly referred to as "paper streets." Nearly two-thirds of the steps are in low or moderate-income areas. Approximately 450 sets of steps are built on structures and 350 are built into sidewalks, known as "jumpwalks". The large number of steps are an engineering approach to the topography upon which the City of Pittsburgh is built. According to author Martin Aurand, Pittsburgh "lies unevenly on unruly land". The city is located at the confluence of two rivers which cut through elevated land of the Appalachian Plateau. The city is settled at elevations ranging from above sea level.
