Ellerslie (Colonial Heights, Virginia)
Ellerslie is an historic home located at Colonial Heights, Virginia. It is a large -story, hip-roofed, Italian Villa style dwelling with a two-story rear service wing connected by an arcade. It features a three-story tower with a hipped roof and a full-width front porch. In 1839, Scottish born Petersburg tobacco magnate David Dunlop and his wife, Anna Mercer Minge, a niece of U.S. President William Henry Harrison, acquired the 200 acre Ellerslie tract along Swift Creek near Petersburg, along the new rail line of the Richmond and Petersburg Railroad Company in Chesterfield County. Dunlop planted tobacco there, eventually more than doubled his land holdings, and constructed Ellerslie, a large plantation house that boasted a mosaic floor and an inner dome with frescoes. On 22 June 1856 Ellerslie was destroyed by fire. Dunlop engaged the Irish architect Robert Young to design a villa-style mansion to replace the first house. Ellerslie is a historic plantation house located near Linden, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was built about 1790, and is a 1 1/2-story, six bay by two bay, Georgian style frame dwelling with a two-story Greek Revival style addition. It features a wide shed porch with plastered cove ceiling. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. History Ellerslie's founder, George Elliot, was born in Scotland in 1755. He immigrated to the American colonies around 1774 and soon entered the lumber business along the Cape Fear River Valley. After building Ellerslie sometime between 1790-1801, Elliot emerged as the largest landowner in his district and was an active political leader. In 1788 he represented Cumberland County at the Hillsborough Convention, which had been called to vote on the new United States Constitution. Ellerslie (Glenwood, Maryland)
Located Glenwood in Howard County, Maryland, United States, Ellerslie Plantation. The Elerslie slave plantation was built on the lands of Captain Thomas Hobbs given to his daughter Amelia. Jasper and Amelia Peddicord built a house (later side-by-side) around a log hunting lodge built about 1763. These were built on portion of land patented as "Ridgley's Great Range''. In 1830, Richard Snowden purchased the land for a wedding present. In 1835, Nicholas Snowden of Montpeiler married Elizabeth Ridgley Warfield. Richard and his sons left to pursue the California Gold Rush. The House was purchased in 1845 by Basil Crapster who expanded the house to an unusual mirrored layout with a duplicate addition on the Western Portion. In 1945 Jaessie Hakes and his wife purchased the manor and 132 acres of surrounding land plus adjoining properties which have been subdivided for residential construction. Ellerslie is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 572. Ellerslie is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Harris County, Georgia, United States. Ellerslie is a part of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 1,053. History A post office called Ellerslie has been in operation since 1828. The name of the community is believed to have origins from a character in the Waverley Novels written by Sir Walter Scott named Captain Ellerslie. The community was struck by a tornado on March 3, 2019, bringing down several trees and damaging the roofs of some homes in the area. No injuries or fatalities occurred. Ellerslie is a suburb of the city of Auckland, in the North Island of New Zealand. Ellerslie lies seven kilometres to the southeast of the city centre, close to State Highway 1. Administratively, Ellerslie forms part of the Ōrākei Local Board, which also includes the suburbs of Orakei, Mission Bay, Kohimarama, Saint Heliers, Glendowie, St Johns, Meadowbank and Remuera. Dorset House was a large house in Headington, Oxford, England. This villa, known in its later years as Dorset House, was built in 1878 on the south side of London Road, Oxford.
