Ellen Krause
Ellen Margrethe Krause Rørup (29 December 1905 — 11 September 1990) was a Danish artist who, after marrying Viggo Rørup in 1937, became a member of the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. Biography Born in Fredericia, Krause was the daughter of a railway official. She studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kræsten Iversen and Ejnar Nielsen, graduating in 1933, the year when she first exhibited at the ''Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling'' (Artists' autumn exhibition). In 1937, she married Viggo Rørup and settled with him in Odsherred for the rest of her life. Paintings Krause is remembered for her touching portraits of children but she also painted still-lifes of flowers and fruit as well as landscapes. The garden in Odsherred, the surrounding fields and scenes of everyday life at home with her husband and child were common motifs. Viggo Rørup
Viggo Julius Rørup (12 September 1903 – 14 January 1971) was a Danish artist who in the early 1930s joined the artists' colony in northwestern Zealand known as the Odsherred Painters. Biography Born in Kalundborg, Rørup studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Ejnar Nielsen and Sigurd Wandel, graduating in 1930. He debuted in 1928 at the ''Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling'' (Artists' Autumn Exhibition). In 1927, he moved into a house in Kårup Bakker in Odsherred as one of the first to join Karl Bovin and Kaj Ejstrup in the group of artists known as the Odsherred Painters. In 1937, he married the artist Ellen Krause who also became a member of the artists' colony. Until 1940, he was mainly a figure painter but he then extended his scope to landscapes. His early paintings are rather dark but after spending some time in France studying the works of the Impressionists, his palette became brighter and his colours more intense, forming a webbing of light and shade. Corner Painters
The Corner painters in Denmark first came together in 1932 when they decided to hold an exhibition in a meeting hall inside an office building on the corner of Vester Voldgade and Studiestræde in the centre of Copenhagen. The group was soon referred to simply as Corner. Among its earlier members were Karl Bovin, Victor Brockdorff, Povl Christensen, Kaj Ejstrup, Lauritz Hartz, Alfred Simonsen, Viggo Rørup and Erik Raadal. Today, with its 49 members, Retrieved 22 March 2016. it is the second largest artists association in Denmark. Regular exhibitions are still held, attracting thousands of visitors. Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling
Den Frie Udstilling ('The Free Exhibition') is a Danish artists' association, founded in 1891 by artists in protest against the admission requirements for the Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Modeled on the Salon des Refusés, it is Denmark's oldest association of artists. Now located on Copenhagen's Oslo Plads next to Østerport Station, it works as an arts centre, continuing to exhibit works created and selected by contemporary artists rather than those chosen by cultural authorities. History The organization was initiated by the painter Johan Rohde (1856–1935) and included several founding members: Jens Ferdinand Willumsen, Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, Vilhelm Hammershøi, Johanne Cathrine Krebs, the couple Harald and Agnes Slott-Møller, Christian Mourier-Petersen and Malthe Engelsted. Artists' Colony
An art colony, also known as an artists' colony, can be defined two ways. Its most liberal description refers to the organic congregation of artists in towns, villages and rural areas, often drawn by areas of natural beauty, the prior existence of other artists or art schools there, and a lower cost of living. More commonly, the term refers to the guest-host model of a mission-driven planned community, which administers a formal process for awarding artist residencies. In the latter case, a typical mission might include providing artists with the time, space and support to create; fostering community among artists; and providing arts education (lectures, workshops) to the public. Early 20th century American guest-host models include New Hampshire's MacDowell Colony and New York's Yaddo. Ejnar Nielsen
Ejnar Nielsen (9 July 1872 – 21 July 1956) was a Danish painter and illustrator, who was a central proponent of Symbolist painting in Danish art. He is also known for his large mosaic on Stærekassen, an extension to the Royal Danish Theatre on Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen. He was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1920 to 1930 and received the Academy's Eckersberg Medal in 1908 and its Thorvaldsen Medal in 1913. Biography Ejnar Nielsen was born in Copenhagen. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1889 and 93 and at Zahrtmann's Painting School from 1895 to 1896. in 1894 he travelled to Gjern in central Jutland where he painted the people and undulating landscapes. During this period, he became established as a central proponent of symbolism in Danish art but after the turn of the century turned to a more classical expression. Kræsten Iversen
Kristen "Kræsten" Iversen (, 26 January 1886 - 9 August 1955) was a Danish artist who is remembered both for his paintings and his painted glass windows. He was a member of the Bornholm school of painters and a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts . Biography Iversen was born in the parish of Holsted in Vejen Municipality, Denmark. He was the son of Niels Laurids Pedersen (1848–1902) and Grethe Hansen (1851–1910). Between 1904-1905, He trained at the Copenhagen Technical College. He exhibited several time during 1910-1918 at the Artists' Autumn Exhibition. In 1919, he exhibited four works at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. In 1920, he visited Bornholm for the first time where the natural colours and distinctive light influenced his landscapes .
