Elkhart is a village in Logan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 405 at the 2010 census. Geography Elkhart is located in southwestern Logan County is in Elkhart and Hurlbut townships, with the geographic center of the village slightly east of the township border, in Elkhart Township. Interstate 55 passes through the northwest part of the village, with access from Exit 115. I-55 leads northeast to Lincoln, the county seat, and southwest to Springfield, the state capital. According to the 2010 census, Elkhart has a total area of , of which (or 99.38%) is land and (or 0.62%) is water. Elkhart Hill, with a summit elevation of , is in the southeast part of the village, rising above the village center and the surrounding flatlands. Edwards Trace
The Edwards Trace was an overland trail that served the frontier region that became Central Illinois. The trail is usually described as extending from Cahokia in the south, to Peoria in the north. During the 1810s and 1820s the trace played a decisive role in the settlement of Central Illinois by Euro-Americans. Buffalo Hart, Illinois
Buffalo Hart is an unincorporated community in northern Sangamon County in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is the population center of its own township, Buffalo Hart Township. Buffalo Hart was originally built in the 19th century, first as a frontier settlement based on a prairie grove, and then as a rural station stop on the Gilman, Clinton and Springfield Railroad twelve miles northeast of Springfield, Illinois, the state capital. Farmers would bring fresh vegetables and milk to the now-vanished railroad station for transportation into nearby cities. The railroad's successor-in-interest, the Canadian National, continues to operate a right-of-way that passes through Buffalo Hart. A small grove of trees about 0.5 miles south of the village, which originally stood out amongst the tallgrass prairie grassland of central Illinois, has long been called "Buffalo Hart."
