Elizabeth Wallace (actor)
Elizabeth Wallace (died January 2011) was a British actress. In 1967 she played the White Witch in ''The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'', a TV series adaptation of the 1950 children's novel. Wallace started acting in the early 1950s. Her last piece of acting was in 1983 in an episode of ''Number 10'', in which she played Lady Jersey. Elizabeth Wallace was godmother to Wendy Craig's son. She died in January 2011. ''Compact'' is a British television soap opera shown by BBC Television from January 1962 to July 1965. The series was created by Hazel Adair and Peter Ling; the partnership devised ''Crossroads'' while ''Compact'' was still running. In contrast to the kitchen sink realism of ''Coronation Street'', ''Compact'' was a distinctly middle-class serial, set in the more "sophisticated" arena of magazine publishing. An early "avarice" soap, it took viewers into the office, and aligned the professional lives of the characters with more personal storylines. ''Tom Brown's Schooldays'' is a 1971 television serial adaptation of the 1857 Thomas Hughes novel ''Tom Brown's Schooldays''. Consisting of five one hour long episodes, the series was directed by Gareth Davies and used a screenplay by Anthony Steven. History ''Tom Brown's Schooldays'' originally screened on the BBC1 Sunday afternoon slot, which often showed serialisations of classics aimed at a family audience. It made some free adaptations to Hughes's novel, creating the role of Flashman's father, and added new sub-plots about Flashman and Arnold. It also included scenes of bullying and corporal punishment which may have been too graphic for family viewing. ''The Plane Makers'' is a British television series created by Wilfred Greatorex and produced by Rex Firkin. ATV made three series for ITV between 1963 and 1965. It was succeeded by ''The Power Game'', which ran for an additional three series from 1965 to 1969. Firkin continued as producer for the first two series, and David Reid took over for series 3. White Witch
Jadis is the main antagonist of '' The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'' (1950) and ''The Magician's Nephew'' (1955) in C. S. Lewis's series, ''The Chronicles of Narnia''. She is commonly referred to as the White Witch in ''The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'', as she is the Witch who froze Narnia in the Hundred Years Winter. Some recent editions of the books include brief notes, added by later editors, that describe the cast of characters. As Lewis scholar Peter Schakel points out, the notes' description of Jadis and the Queen of Underland (the main antagonist of ''The Silver Chair'') "states incorrectly that the Queen of Underland is an embodiment of Jadis". Plot The series, based on a sequence of novels by Edgar Wallace including a 1905 novel titled '' The Four Just Men'', presents the adventures of four men who first meet while Allied soldiers in Italy during the Second World War, tasked with the dangerous job to blow up a bridge behind enemy lines. In England in 1959 the men are contacted by telegram by their commanding officer, Colonel Cyril Bacon. to meet again. Col. Bacon died a week before, but has left a recorded message for the men.
