Elizabeth Swaney
Elizabeth Marian Swaney OLY (born 30 July 1984) is an American born-and-raised freestyle skier who competed for Hungary in the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women's halfpipe based on her Hungarian ancestry. She was unable to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics for Venezuela in both skeleton and freestyle skiing, and qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the women's halfpipe, in which she placed last. Athletic career While at University of California, Berkeley, Swaney was the coxswain for the men's rowing team. She first thought she would try competing in bobsleigh as a pilot, but was told she was too small to be competitive in the sport. She then turned to skeleton and freestyle skiing, in which she sought to represent Venezuela, her mother's homeland, at the 2014 Winter Olympics. Freestyle Skiing At The 2018 Winter Olympics – Women's Halfpipe
The Women's halfpipe event in freestyle skiing at the 2018 Winter Olympics took place on 19 and 20 February 2018 at the Bogwang Phoenix Park, Pyeongchang, South Korea. Qualification The top 30 athletes in the Olympic quota allocation list qualified, with a maximum of four athletes per National Olympic Committee (NOC) allowed. All athletes qualifying must also have placed in the top 30 of a FIS World Cup event or the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships 2017 during the qualification period (July 1, 2016 to January 21, 2018) and also have a minimum of 50 FIS points to compete. If the host country, South Korea at the 2018 Winter Olympics did not qualify, their chosen athlete would displace the last qualified athlete, granted all qualification criteria were met. David Wise (born June 30, 1990) is an American freestyle skier. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2014, 2018) and a four-time X Games Gold Medalist (2012, 2013, 2014, 2018). In 2014, Wise won his third consecutive gold medal at Winter X Games XVIII in Aspen, Colorado, before heading to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Cassie Sharpe
Cassie Sharpe (born September 14, 1992) is a Canadian freestyle skier. Sharpe became the Olympic champion in women's halfpipe after winning gold in Pyeongchang, South Korea at the 2018 Winter Olympics. She won a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships in halfpipe in Kreischberg and won gold and bronze in superpipe at the Winter X Games in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Career She grew up in Comox, British Columbia on Vancouver Island and learned how to ski with her family, skiing for the first time with her brothers at age 11. Her parents enrolled her in Bumps and Jumps at Mount Washington in 2004. Sharpe competed in moguls, aerials, and slopestyle in her early years. The Olympic quota allocation system is a program designed to limit the number of athletes participating, and prevent a small number of countries from dominating the field of an Olympic event. Winter Olympics Freestyle skiing Initially freestyle skiing had two events (moguls and aerials). There were quotas brought in to limit the number of competitors (particularly from the United States and Canada), which are highly competitive in the two events. for the 2010 Olympics the quota system limited the competition for men and women's freestyle skiing (moguls, aerials, and ski-cross) to 180 athletes. Irrespective of international ranking, each country could only have eighteen athletes, and a maximum of ten men or ten women. With the addition of slopestyle and half-pipe in the Sochi Olympics in 2014 the quotas were increased to 282 total athletes, 26 per country, and 14 per gender.
