Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center
The Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center is located on a site by the Black River in Chester Township, Morris County, New Jersey. The center was dedicated on October 28, 1993. The property, previously known as Hidden River Farm, was donated by Elizabeth D. Kay and her husband Alfred. The building is used as the field office of The Nature Conservancy in New Jersey. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 7,838, reflecting an increase of 556 (+7.6%) from the 7,282 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 1,324 (+22.2%) from the 5,958 counted in the 1990 Census. Patriots' Path
The Patriots' Path is a multi-use trail system in Morris County, New Jersey, open to cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders, consisting of a main trail and of spur trails. The main trail is marked with white blazes or a white circular blaze with a brown tree. The spur trails are marked with blue blazes or a white circle with a blue tree, while the side spur trails are marked with a red blaze or a white circle with a red tree. Description Patriots' Path stretches from East Hanover, where it connects with the Lenape Trail in Essex County, to Allamuchy Mountain State Park in Sussex County, and the Village of High Bridge in Hunterdon County. Black River County Park
The Black River County Park is a public park in Morris County, New Jersey operated by the Morris County Park Commission. The park covers an area of along the eastern shore of the Black River and is located between Long Valley and Chester. Its land represents a glacial valley carved by the Black River and some of its tributaries. The park is home to the Nathan Cooper Gristmill, the Elizabeth D. Kay Environmental Center, the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center, and the Willowwood Arboretum. The land was mined for iron ore during the 19th centuries, and within the park is an old iron mine. In 1883 the Hacklebarney Branch of the High Bridge Railroad, later part of the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ), was built to serve the local iron mines. The railway was abandoned in 1900. The railway trestle has in part become part of a hiking trail along the river. Willowwood Arboretum
Willowwood Arboretum, , is an arboretum and public park located at 300 Longview Road, Chester Township, New Jersey, Morris County, New Jersey. It is part of the Morris County Park System and is open to the public daily. The location was first cleared for farming in the 18th century, which led to the formation of the meadows that now exist on the property. It was originally named ''Paradise Farm'' before being bought by Henry and Robert Tubbs in 1908, who then renamed the property ''Willowwood'' after the natural collection of willow trees that exist in the area. They expanded the farmhouse that dates back to 1792 and made it into their family home. Both amateur horticulturalists, the brothers collected and grew many specimens over the next half century, including a vast collection of rare and exotic species, thanks in part to the popular New York horticultural scene at the dawn of the 20th century.
