Elizabeth Coxen
Elizabeth Frances Coxen née Isaac (1825–1906) was an Australian naturalist and meteorologist. Born in Gloucestershire, England, she emigrated to with her family to Sydney, Australia in 1839. She was a collector of shells, insects and birds, as was her husband, Charles Coxen, and they donated many specimens to the Queensland Museum, where Elizabeth worked as curator. After her husband's death she became the first female elected a member of the Royal Society of Queensland. She died in Brisbane on 11 August 1906 and was buried with her husband in the cemetery of Christ Church in Tingalpa. Her friends commissioned a plaque commemorating her at St John the Baptist Anglican Church at Bulimba Bulimba is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Tingalpa is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Tingalpa had a population of 8,290 people. Geography The suburb has some older style homes built in the post war period – weatherboard and chamferboard post war cottages in particular. Most of the new estates are made up of typically low set and high set brick and tile homes. Previously the land that is now being developed into residential zones was devoted to small farmlets and semi-industrial developments. The recent developments, which occurred in the last five years, are increasing the population and the median house prices of the suburb. Also nearby is the Murarrie railway station that runs west to the city and east to Manly and the bay. There are also several bus routes from Tingalpa to neighbouring suburbs. Bulimba
Bulimba is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Bulimba had a population of 6,843 people. Geography Bulimba is located north-east of the CBD on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, but it is by road. Toponymy Bulimba is reportedly a Yugarapul word used meaning 'place of the magpie lark'. The same word is the origin of the nearby Bulimba Creek, and of the Bulimba Reach on which the suburb is located. The leader, Bilin Bilin, has his name based upon the magpie lark, or the pee-wee. History Bulimba was originally inhabited by the Yuggara people, who have lived in the area for at least 20,000 years. In the 1820s, Bulimba was called Toogoolawah and was settled as a farming district, with residential subdivision commencing in the 1880s land boom. In 1862, a Baptist church opened in Bulimba. St John the Baptist Anglican Church is a heritage-listed church at 171 Oxford Street, Bulimba, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by John Hingeston Buckeridge and built in 1888 by T Whitty. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 9 July 2003. Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd worshipped for many years at this church, being within his electorate of the Division of Griffith. History St John the Baptist Anglican Church is a timber church constructed in 1888 and is prominently sited at an intersection of the main street of Bulimba. Christ Church Tingalpa and Burial Ground is a heritage-listed former Anglican church at 1341 Wynnum Road, Tingalpa, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1868 to 1993. It is now known as the Pioneer Wedding Chapel. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 2 February 1998. History The present Christ Church Tingalpa was erected in 1886 for the Anglican parish of Tingalpa, replacing an 1868 church designed by Brisbane architect Richard George Suter and demolished during the cyclone of 5 December 1885. It is understood that materials salvaged from the wreckage of the 1868 church were used to construct the second, smaller building.
