Elisha Ward
Elisha Ward (June 20, 1804 Poultney (town), Vermont, Poultney, Rutland County, Vermont – January 25, 1860 Silver Creek, New York, Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of William Ward (1778–1850) and Anna (Spencer) Ward (d. 1819). On May 28, 1833, he married Eliza Pease, and they had five children. In 1836, he removed to Dunkirk, New York, and in 1839 to Silver Creek. In 1840, he was appointed as an associate judge of the Chautauqua County Court. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Chautauqua Co.) in 69th New York State Legislature, 1846. He was a member of the New York State Senate (32nd D.) in 75th New York State Legislature, 1852 and 76th New York State Legislature, 1853. Poultney (town), Vermont
Poultney is a town in Rutland County in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Vermont. New York state is on its western border. Castleton, Vermont, is on its northern border. Poultney was home to Green Mountain College, a private liberal arts college that closed in 2019. The Village of Poultney is entirely within the town. The town population was 3,020 at the 2020 census. History One of the New Hampshire Grants, Poultney was charted on September 21, 1761, by Benning Wentworth, Royal Governor of New Hampshire, and named for William Pulteney, 1st Earl of Bath, a British politician and orator. Poultney was first settled by Thomas Ashley and Ebenezer Allen. Ashley married Zeruiah Richards, and Allen married Lydia Richards, both daughters of Zebulon Richards of Windham County, Connecticut. Rutland County, Vermont
Rutland County is a county located in the U.S. state of Vermont. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,572, making it the second-most populous county in Vermont. Its county seat and most populous municipality is the city of Rutland. History On February 16, 1781, Rutland County was created from Bennington County. From June 26, 1781, until February 23, 1782, Vermont attempted to annex part of New York east of the Hudson River (the so-called West Union); inhabitants in the area favored Vermont's township form of government, while Vermont hoped to gain bargaining power through expansion.
