Elisha Smith Robinson
Elisha Smith Robinson (1817–1885) was an English businessman and politician. Early life and business career Robinson was born in 1817 in Overbury, on the Worcestershire/Gloucestershire borders where his father Edward Robinson, a paper maker, lived in Silver Rill House. He was apprenticed to his maternal grandfather, Rev. Elisha Smith, a grocer and Baptist Minister in Blockley and Chipping Camden. In 1840, his father threatened to replace him within the family business with a Londoner, so he ventured to Bristol with a small loan. He founded his own printing and packaging business, E. S. & A. Robinson, in 1844. Within 20 years, his firm was the largest buyer of paper in the British Empire. Family In 1845 he married Elizabeth Ring, with whom he had eight children; she died in 1871. The position of Lord Mayor of Bristol was conferred on the city in June 1899 (effective 15 November 1899) as part of the Queen's Birthday Honours and was confirmed by letters patent dated 1 April 1974. Prior to November 1899 the position of Mayor of Bristol had existed since 1216. The Lord Mayor is the Chairperson of the City Council and has the casting vote. As Bristol's first citizen, they are the non-political, ceremonial head of the city. The Lord Mayor of Bristol is styled The Right Honourable, although without official sanction, rather than the more normal Right Worshipful enjoyed by most other Lord Mayors. Thomas Robinson (Gloucester MP)
Sir Thomas Robinson (January 1827 – 26 Oct 1897) was an English corn merchant and Liberal politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1880 and 1895. Robinson was born at Weston. He became a corn merchant of Gloucester and was an Alderman and mayor of the city four times. He was also a J.P. In 1873 Robinson stood in a by-election Gloucester after out manoeuvering former Liberal member John Joseph Powell for the candidature, but was defeated. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Gloucester in 1880 after the Liberals had established a party caucus chosen by ward meetings, resulting in improved organisation. However bribery and corruption were on a major scale in Gloucester and Robinson was unseated in the same year. His willingness to stand down and the unwillingness of the Conservatives to take matters further led to suspicions of collusion between the parties and a Royal Commission was set up to examine electoral practices. Arnold Wathen Robinson
Arnold Wathen Robinson RWA, FMGP (1888–1955) was an English stained-glass artist. Although Robinson's family, on the paternal and maternal side were involved in local government, he sought a career as a stained-glass artist. During World War I he initially enlisted in the Artists Rifles, and was then released from military service to manage a shell factory. Theodore Robinson (cricketer)
Theodore Robinson (16 February 1866 – 4 October 1959) played first-class cricket for Somerset in 10 matches between 1884 and 1894. He was born at Beaminster in Dorset and died at Backwell, Somerset. Family and background Robinson was a member of an entrepreneurial family who had interests in paper-making and printing in Bristol and London and in a wide range of goods in Singapore. The family company of E. S. & A. Robinson owned a large printing and paper-bag manufacturing site at Bedminster in Bristol. The extensive Robinson family had estates at Flax Bourton and Backwell, south of Bristol, and at the age of 13 in 1879 Theodore was part of a team of "Eleven Robinsons" that played a match against the Backwell Cricket Club at the Flax Bourton ground. This event was repeated in various forms until 1964 and included a match against an all Grace team in 1891.
