Elisa Shua Dusapin, born 23 October 1992 in Sarlat-la-Canéda, France, is a Franco-Korean writer currently living in Switzerland. In 2016, Elisa Shua Dusapin published her first novel, '' Hiver à Sokcho'', which won numerous awards, including the National Book Award for Translated Literature, the Prix Robert-Walser, Prix Alpha and the Prix Régine-Deforges. Sarlat-la-Canéda
Sarlat-la-Canéda (; oc, Sarlat e La Canedat), commonly known as Sarlat, is a commune in the southwestern French department of Dordogne, a part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Sarlat and La Canéda were distinct towns until merged into one commune in 1965. Geography The town of Sarlat is in a region known in France as Périgord Noir. It lies in the southeastern part of the Dordogne department, 7 km north of the river Dordogne. Sarlat railway station offers train services to Bergerac, Bordeaux and Périgueux. ''Winter in Sokcho'' () is the first novel by French- Korean writer Elisa Shua Dusapin published in 2016. It was translated by Aneesa Abbas Higgins into English in 2021. The story follows the interactions of the narrator and a French comic writer during the writer's visit to Sokcho in search for inspiration. Plot ''Winter in Sokcho'' begins at a guesthouse located in Sokcho, South Korea, a fishing town which dies during the colder months due to less traffic from tourists. The story is told through the eyes of the narrator, an unnamed woman of French-Korean decent, who introduces the reader to Yan Kerrand, a French graphic novelist looking for inspiration for his latest story. Kerrand checking into the guesthouse is the start of their tense, uncomfortable, borderline romantic/sexual acquaintanceship. National Book Award For Translated Literature
The National Book Award for Translated Literature is one of five annual National Book Awards recognising outstanding literary works of translation into English administered by the National Book Foundation. This award was previously given from 1967 to 1983 but did not require the author to be living and was for fiction only. It was reintroduced in its new version in 2018 and was open to living translators and authors, for both fiction and non-fiction. The award recognises one book published by a U.S. publisher located in the United States from December 1 to November 30. The original text need not have been published in the year of the award submission, only the translated work. For the Translated Literature award neither author nor translator are required to be U.S. citizens. Entries for the National Book Awards are open from March until May.
