Eli B. Ames
Eli B. Ames (August 3, 1820 – February 12, 1897) was a lawyer, postmaster, judge, and Democratic Party (United States), Democratic politician who served as the fourth List of mayors of Minneapolis, mayor of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Life and career Ames was born on August 3, 1820, in Colchester, Vermont. His brother was Alfred Elisha Ames. When he was a child, his family moved to Ohio, later relocating to Ottawa, Illinois. While there, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1842. He later moved to Hennepin, Illinois, where he served as postmaster and later as a probate judge. Ames served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1851 to 1852. After his term in the Illinois General Assembly, he worked as an aide to Joel Aldrich Matteson. In 1855, he was appointed to the Consulate General of the United States, Hamburg, American consulate in Hamburg, Germany as consul. Joel Aldrich Matteson
Joel Aldrich Matteson (August 8, 1808 – January 31, 1873) was the tenth Governor of Illinois, serving from 1853 to 1857. In 1855, he became the first governor to reside in the Illinois Executive Mansion. In January 1855, during the joint legislative session of the Illinois House and Senate convened to choose a US senator, he became a surprise candidate. On the 9th ballot, he received 47 votes, 3 short of the 50 needed to win. Abraham Lincoln, who was also a contestant, then asked his supporters to vote for Lyman Trumbull, who won on the 10th ballot. After his term as governor ended he was for many years the president of the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The last years of his life were marred by charges of corruption in the Canal Scrip Fraud case. The village of Matteson, Illinois is named in his honor. Lakewood Cemetery is a large private, non-sectarian cemetery located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. It is located at 3600 Hennepin Avenue at the southern end of the Uptown area. It is noted for its chapel which is on the National Register of Historic Places and was modeled after the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey. History About 250 acres in size, Lakewood memorializes the dead with more than 200,000 monuments, markers and memorializations. Long considered one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country, it was modeled after the rural cemeteries of 19th-century France, such as Père-Lachaise in Paris.
