Elemental Plane
The planes of the '' Dungeons & Dragons'' roleplaying game constitute the multiverse in which the game takes place. Each plane is a universe with its own rules with regard to gravity, geography, magic and morality. There have been various official cosmologies over the course of the different editions of the game; these cosmologies describe the structure of the standard ''Dungeons & Dragons'' multiverse. The concept of the Inner, Ethereal, Prime Material, Astral, and Outer Planes was introduced in the earliest versions of ''Dungeons & Dragons''; at the time there were only four Inner Planes and no set number of Outer Planes. This later evolved into what became known as the Great Wheel cosmology. The 4th Edition of the game shifted to the World Axis cosmology. The 5th Edition brought back a new version of the Great Wheel cosmology which includes aspects of World Axis model. In addition, some ''Dungeons & Dragons'' settings have cosmologies that are very different from the "sta ...

Alignment (Dungeons & Dragons)
In the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (''D&D'') fantasy role-playing game, alignment is a categorization of the ethical and moral perspective of player characters, non-player characters, and creatures. Most versions of the game feature a system in which players make two choices for characters. One is the character's views on "law" versus "chaos", the other on "good" versus "evil". The two axes allow for nine alignments in combination. Later editions of ''D&D'' have shifted away from tying alignment to specific game mechanics; instead, alignment is used as a roleplaying guide and does not need to be rigidly adhered to by the player. According to Ian Livingstone, alignment is "often criticized as being arbitrary and unreal, but... it works if played well and provides a useful structural framework on which not only characters but governments and worlds can be moulded." History ''D&D'' co-creator Gary Gygax credited the inspiration for the alignment system to the fantasy stories of Michael M ...

Dungeons And Dragons 5th Edition, Great Wheel Planar Cosmology
A dungeon is a room or cell in which prisoners are held, especially underground. Dungeons are generally associated with medieval castles, though their association with torture probably belongs more to the Renaissance period. An oubliette (from french ''oublier'' meaning to ''forget'') or bottle dungeon is a basement room which is accessible only from a hatch or hole (an ''angstloch'') in a high ceiling. Victims in oubliettes were often left to starve and dehydrate to death, making the practice akin to—and some say an actual variety of—immurement. Etymology The word ''dungeon'' comes from French ''donjon'' (also spelled ''dongeon''), which means "keep", the main tower of a castle. The first recorded instance of the word in English was near the beginning of the 14th century when it held the same meaning as ''donjon''. The proper original meaning of "keep" is still in use for academics, although in popular culture it has been largely misused and come to mean a cell or "oubliet ...

Nevertheless, RPGNow recorded better than 10% growth in every year of its operation". DriveThruRPG DriveThruRPG ...

Sigil (Dungeons & Dragons)
Sigil () is a fictional city and the center of the Planescape campaign setting for the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game. Publication history Development Sigil was originally created for Planescape as the setting's "home base". According to Steve Winter in '' 30 Years of Adventure: A Celebration of Dungeons & Dragons'', "A movable base, like a vessel of some sort (or an artifact, which was the original idea for the means of traversing the planes) wouldn't do it. It had to be a place that characters could come home to when they needed to, and it had to be central to the nature of the setting." Sigil's fifteen factions were created because, "'' Vampire: The Masquerade'' was a particularly hot game at hetime and one of the ideas in it that we really liked was the clans. Jim Ward wanted to be sure that players had something to identify with and to give them a sense of belonging in this alien venue igil" ''Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' 2nd edition (1989–1999 ...

Planescape
''Planescape'' is a campaign setting for the ''Dungeons & Dragons'' fantasy role-playing game, designed by Zeb Cook, and published in 1994. It crosses numerous planes of existence, encompassing an entire cosmology called the Great Wheel, as developed previously in the 1987 ''Manual of the Planes'' by Jeff Grubb. This includes many of the other ''Dungeons & Dragons'' worlds, linking them via inter-dimensional magical portals. Publication history Development ''Planescape'' is an expansion of ideas presented in the ''Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' ''Dungeon Master's Guide'' (First Edition) and the original ''Manual of the Planes''. When ''Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'' 2nd edition was published, a decision was made not to include angelic or demonic creatures, and so the cosmology was largely ignored. However, fan demand for a 2nd Edition ''Manual of the Planes'' was strong enough to justify its expansion into a full-fledged campaign setting, and so in 1994 Planescape was release ...

Each domain is tailored to and mystically ruled by a being called a Darklord (Ravenloft), Darklord who is forever trapped and surrounded by magical mists surrounding the domain. Strahd von Zarovich, a vampire in the original ''AD&D'' ''Ravenloft'' I6 module 1983, became the first Darklord, both ruler and prisoner of his own personal domain of Barovia. Dark Sun
''Dark Sun'' is an original ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (D&D) campaign setting set in the fictional, post-apocalyptic desert world of Athas. ''Dark Sun'' featured an innovative metaplot, influential art work, dark themes, and a genre-bending take on traditional fantasy role-playing. The product line began with the original ''Dark Sun Boxed Set'' released for D&D's 2nd edition in 1991, originally ran until 1996, and was one of TSR's most successful releases. ''Dark Sun'' deviated from the feudalistic backdrops of its Tolkienesque pseudo-medieval contemporaries, such as ''Greyhawk'' or ''Forgotten Realms'', in favor of a composite of dark fantasy, planetary romance, and the Dying Earth subgenre. ''Dark Sun''s designers presented a savage, magic-ravaged desert world where resources are scarce and survival is a daily struggle. The traditional fantasy races and character classes were altered or omitted to better suit the setting's darker themes. ''Dark Sun'' differs further in that t ...

Commonly referred to by players and game designers alike as "The Realms", it was created by game designer Ed Greenwood around 1967 as a setting for his childhood stories.
