Electrona, Tasmania
Electrona is a rural residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Kingborough in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south of the town of Kingston. The 2016 census recorded a population of 364 for the state suburb of Electrona. Electrona is also part of the Greater Hobart statistical area. It is a small residential area on the d'Entrecasteaux Channel in Southern Tasmania. It grew up around the Electrona Carbide Works which were established in 1909. History Electrona was gazetted as a locality in 1965. It is believed that the name was derived from the fact that a company making carbide, the first electrolytic industry in Tasmania, was on this site. Around 1908, James Gillies began negotiations with the State government to permit the construction of a Hydroelectric Power Scheme at Tasmania's Great Lake, for the purpose of providing power for his newly patented zinc smelting process and a calcium carbide factory. 1967 Tasmanian Fires
The 1967 Tasmanian fires were an Australian natural disaster which occurred on 7 February 1967, an event which came to be known as the Black Tuesday bushfires. They were the most deadly bushfires that Tasmania has ever experienced, leaving 62 people dead, 900 injured and over seven thousand homeless. Extent of the fires 110 separate fire fronts burnt through some of land in southern Tasmania within the space of five hours. Fires raged from near Hamilton and Bothwell to the D'Entrecasteaux Channel as well as Snug. There was extensive damage to agricultural property along the Channel, the Derwent Valley and the Huon Valley. Fires also destroyed forest, public infrastructure and properties around Mount Wellington and many small towns along the Derwent estuary and east of Hobart. Lutana is a residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of Glenorchy in the Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-east of the town of Glenorchy. The 2016 census recorded a population of 2353 for the state suburb of Lutana. It is a suburb of Hobart. It is a large residential suburb located between the Brooker Highway and the River Derwent. History Lutana was gazetted as a locality in 1961. It was originally built by Electrolytic Zinc (the operator of the Risdon Zinc Works) as homes for its employees at the nearby zinc works. Lutana means "moon" in one of the Aboriginal Tasmanian languages. The homes were later sold off and are now privately owned.
