Electra (1962 Film)
''Electra'' ( el, Ηλέκτρα ''Ilektra'') is a 1962 Greek film based on the play ''Electra (Euripides), Electra'', written by Euripides. It was directed by Michael Cacoyannis, as the first installment of his "Greek tragedy" trilogy, followed by ''The Trojan Women (film), The Trojan Women'' in 1971 and ''Iphigenia (film), Iphigenia'' in 1977. It starred Irene Papas in the lead role as Elektra, and Giannis Fertis as Orestis. Plot King Agamemnon is murdered by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover and Agememnon's cousin and childhood playmate Aegisthus. Of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra's children, Orestes goes into exile and safety while Electra is confined to the palace for some years and then forced to marry a peasant to disgrace her and any children. Michael Cacoyannis
Michael Cacoyannis ( el, Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης, ''Michalis Kakogiannis''; 11 June 1922 – 25 July 2011), sometimes credited as Michael Yannis, was a Greek Cypriots, Greek Cypriot theatre and film director, writer, producer, and actor. Much of his work was rooted in classical texts, especially those of the Tragedy#Greek tragedy, Greek tragedian Euripides. His most acclaimed work is the 1964 film ''Zorba the Greek (film), Zorba the Greek,'' an adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis' Zorba the Greek, novel of the same name. He also directed the 1983 Broadway revival of the Zorba (musical), musical based on the film. In addition to directing, he also wrote, produced, translated, and designed dozens of stage play and opera productions. In Greek mythology, Pylades (; Ancient Greek: Πυλάδης) was a Phocian prince as the son of King Strophius and Anaxibia who is the daughter of Atreus and sister of Agamemnon and Menelaus. He is mostly known for his relationship with his cousin Orestes, son of Agamemnon. Mythology Orestes and Pylades Orestes had been sent to Phocis during his mother Clytemnestra's affair with Aegisthus. There he was raised with Pylades, and so considered him to be his closest friend. While Orestes was away, Clytemnestra killed her husband, Orestes' father Agamemnon. Death of Aegisthus and Clytemnestra As an adult, Orestes returns to Mycenae/Argos to avenge the murder of Agamemnon. With the assistance of his friend Pylades, Orestes kills his mother Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus. Greece has submitted films for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. The award is handed out annually by the United States Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. It was created for the 1956 Academy Awards, in which a competitive Academy Award of Merit, known as the Best Foreign Language Film Award, was created for non-English speaking films, and has been given annually since. For the 78th Academy Awards, Greece selected '' Nyfes'' but it was ruled ineligible for being in English. This is a list of submissions to the 35th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The Thessaloniki Film Festival started in 1960 and at the beginning comprised exclusively Greek films. The first years (1960-1965) the festival was called "Week of Greek Cinema". From 1965 to 1991 the festival was called Festival of Greek Cinema and from 1992 became an international film festival as the Thessaloniki International Film Festival.
