Electoral Division Of Sanderson
Sanderson is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1974, and derives its name from the name initially given to the area in 1879, before its division into suburbs. Sanderson is an urban electorate, covering 21 km² and taking in the Darwin suburbs of Anula, Marrara, Wulagi and part of Malak. There were 5,449 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020. Sanderson is a bellwether seat that has only tended to change hands at times of major political change in the Territory. It was initially won by the Country Liberal Party's Liz Andrew in 1974, when the CLP won all but two seats in the Assembly (both of which went to independents). However, Andrew was defeated by the Labor Party's June D'Rozario when the ALP swept into the Assembly in 1977, taking several seats. Kate Worden
Kathryn Jane Worden is an Australian politician. She is a United Labour Party (Armenia), Labor member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly since 2016, representing the electorate of Electoral division of Sanderson, Sanderson. Early life and career Worden moved to Australia with her family in 1981, attending school in Adelaide. She moved to Ngukkurr in the Northern Territory in 1985. Worden was an Alderman on the City of Darwin Council for three years. She was the Chair of the Community and Cultural, and Arts and Cultural Development Committees. Malak, Northern Territory
Malak is a Northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History Malak is named after the Aboriginal tribe who came from the Daly River area. Alternative spellings have been ''Mallak'', ''Mulluck Mulluck''. The naming intended in 1965 to have the tribe pronounced ''Mulluck''. The suburb of Malak was under construction when Cyclone Tracy devastated Darwin in late 1974. Historically, a high proportion of the residential dwellings in Malak and the neighbouring suburb of Marrara have been allocated to social housing, however statistics show this demographic to be changing over time. Peter Styles (politician)
Peter Donald Styles (born 8 July 1953) is an Australian politician. He was a Country Liberal Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2008 to 2016, representing the electorate of Sanderson. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Styles owned and operated a multi-purpose ship and worked as a public servant for the state government, before joining Western Australia Police. In 1981, he moved to Darwin and transferred to the Northern Territory Police where he served for 27 years. In 1991, he was awarded the National Medal, and was upgraded to 1st clasp in 2001. 2005 Northern Territory General Election
A general election was held in the Northern Territory, Australia, on 18 June 2005. The centre-left Australian Labor Party (Northern Territory Branch), Labor Party, led by Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Chief Minister Clare Martin, won a second term with a landslide victory, winning six of the ten seats held by the opposition Country Liberal Party in the 25-member Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, bringing their total to 19. It was the second largest victory in any Northern Territory election. Leonard Francis Kiely (born 1954) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Sanderson in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2008. Kiely was first elected in 2001 following the retirement of CLP member Daryl Manzie. Daryl Manzie
Daryl William Manzie (born 2 November 1946) is an Australian former politician. He was the Country Liberal Party member for Sanderson in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 2001. Manzie moved to the Northern Territory in 1968, and served as a police officer for 15 years with the Northern Territory Police. At the 1983 general election, Manzie was elected to the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly for the seat of Sanderson. June D'Rozario
June D'Rozario (born 16 June 1949) is an Australian urban planner and former politician. She was born in Lucknow, India and is of Anglo-Indian descent. D'Rozario studied planning at the University of South Australia, before joining the State Planning Office. After Cyclone Tracy in 1974, she moved to Darwin, Northern Territory to assist with the reconstruction effort. In 1977, she was elected as a Labor member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, unexpectedly defeating Executive Member for Law Liz Andrew in the seat of Sanderson. She held the seat until her defeat by Daryl Manzie at the 1983 election. D'Rozario currently runs a Town & Regional Planning practice in Darwin, Northern Territory. Elizabeth Jean Andrew (later Andrew-Oates; 28 February 1948 – 12 April 1993) was an Australian politician. She was a Country Liberal Party member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1974 to 1977, representing the suburban Darwin electorate of Sanderson. She served as Executive Member for Education and Community Services and Executive Member for Education and Law in the ministry of Dr Goff Letts. Andrew was born in Border Town, South Australia, and was educated at Western Teachers College and the University of Adelaide. She moved to Darwin in 1973, and taught variously at Gillen, Katherine and Wagaman before her election to the Legislative Assembly in 1974 at the age of 26. The Country Liberal Party of the Northern Territory (CLP) is a centre-right political party in Australia's Northern Territory. In local politics it operates in a two-party system with the Australian Labor Party (ALP). It also contests federal elections as an affiliate of the Liberal Party of Australia and National Party of Australia, the two partners in the federal coalition. Wulagi, Northern Territory
Wulagi is a Northern suburb of Darwin, Northern Territory, in the Northern Territory of Australia. History Wulagi is one of Darwin's northern suburbs east of Lee Point Road and was built after Cyclone Tracy struck Darwin, Northern Territory in 1974. The name originates from an Aboriginal tribe on the Blyth and Cadell Rivers in Central Arnhem Land. Development of the area was primarily during the 1970s and 1980s. Like the neighbouring suburb of Anula, Wulagi is largely built on a plateau with a downhill slope on its east side. The suburb was designed as a low-density, low-traffic suburb with pedestrian access facilitated by a number of laneways and a 'green-belt' that runs from Wulagi Primary School and the central shopping area westwards. The Australian Labor Party (Northern Territory Branch), commonly known as Territory Labor, is the Northern Territory branch of the Australian Labor Party. It has been the governing party of the Northern Territory since winning the 2016 election under Michael Gunner. It previously held office from 2001 to 2012. Marrara is a northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. History Shown on Goyder's original surveys of Darwin in 1869 was the swamp between the suburb and the Darwin International Airport, but like Leanyer, the name is believed to be derived from an Aboriginal name for the area.
