Electoral District Of Southern River
Southern River is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the state of Western Australia. The district is a marginal seat based in the southern suburbs of Perth. Geography Southern River is an electorate situated in Perth's southern suburbs. The district includes the suburbs of Southern River and Huntingdale, as well as parts of the suburbs of Canning Vale and Gosnells. History Southern River was first contested at the 1996 state election. The seat was won by Liberal Party candidate Monica Holmes who defeated Labor candidate Judyth Watson, the latter being at the time member for the abolished Kenwick. Holmes was defeated at the 2001 state election by Labor candidate Paul Andrews. The redistribution ahead of the 2005 state election shifted Southern River eastward, making the seat safer for the Labor Party. Monica Rose Holmes, ''née'' Blagrove (born 1944) is an English-born Australian politician. Biography Early life Monica Holmes was born in Bushey in Hertfordshire, England on 25 June 1944. Peter Abetz
Peter Abetz (born 17 December 1952) is an Australian former politician who was a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 2008 to 2017, representing Southern River. Biography Abetz is one of six children. His parents migrated to Tasmania from Germany in 1961. His father, a radio technician, decided to emigrate after reading in a newspaper that a trade mission led by the minister responsible for the Tasmanian Hydro-Electric Commission was visiting Stuttgart in search of skilled workers for employment in "The Hydro's" power projects, on which his father subsequently worked. Abetz's younger brother, Eric Abetz has represented the state of Tasmania in the Australian Senate since 1994, serving as a minister in the Howard and Abbott governments. 2008 Western Australian State Election
The 2008 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 6 September 2008 to elect 59 members to the Legislative Assembly and 36 members to the Legislative Council. The incumbent centre-left Labor Party government, in power since the 2001 election and led since 25 January 2006 by Premier Alan Carpenter, was defeated by the centre-right Liberal Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Colin Barnett since 6 August 2008. The election resulted in a hung parliament with no party gaining a majority. Labor was two seats short of a majority in the expanded legislature. Ultimately, the Liberals were able to form a coalition government with the WA Nationals, supported by three independents. Paul William Andrews (11 November 195522 October 2009) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 2001 to 2008, representing the electorate of Southern River. Andrews entered parliament at the 2001 state election by defeating sitting Liberal MP Monica Holmes. He won re-election at the 2005 state election by defeating Holmes a second time. Seeking a third term at the 2008 state election, Andrews lost his seat to Liberal candidate Peter Abetz. Judyth Watson
Judyth Watson (8 March 1940 - 9 July 2023) was an Australian former politician. Early life Watson was born in Burton-on-Trent, England to Cecil and Hylda Watson in 1940. She emigrated to Australia in 1949 and went to school at Perth Modern School. After working as a nurse, Watson completed a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977. In 1981 she completed a PhD studying workers compensation. Political career In 1986 Watson was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly for the electorate of Canning. On election she and Carmen Lawrence were the first female members of the WA Parliament to hold a PhD. Watson was appointed Minister for Aboriginal Affairs; Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs; and Seniors in February 1991 under Premier Carmen Lawrence.
