Somerset was an Queensland Legislative Assembly electoral districts, electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland, Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1950 to 1992. Its area was mostly inherited from the abolished district of Electoral district of Stanley (Queensland), Stanley, located in the upper Brisbane River valley. It was named after Lake Somerset. Somerset was mostly a safe National Party of Australia – Queensland, Country/National party seat, although was won by Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), Labor in the 1953 Queensland state election, 1953 election. It was abolished in the 1991 redistribution, and its territory was distributed between the districts of Electoral district of Lockyer, Lockyer and Electoral district of Crows Nest, Crows Nest. Alexander James Skinner (2 November 1910 – 3 October 1968) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Skinner was born at Boonah, Queensland, the son of William Skinner and his wife Fanny Elizabeth (née Thomas). Bill Gunn (Queensland Politician, Born 1920)
William Angus Manson Gunn AM (22 June 1920 – 20 September 2001) was an Australian politician who represented the Queensland Legislative Assembly seat of Somerset from 1972 until 1992. A member of the National Party, he also served as a Minister and Deputy Premier in various Queensland administrations during the 1980s, and was instrumental in establishing the Fitzgerald Inquiry. Early life William Angus Manson Gunn was born in Laidley, Queensland in the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane, the youngest of seven children to Ewen William Gunn and his wife Rosia (née Geismann). He attended Laidley North Primary School and Gatton High School, and played representative rugby league football for Ipswich in the Bulimba Cup competition. Queensland Labor Party
The Queensland Labor Party (QLP) was a political party of Queensland, Australia formed in 1957 by a breakaway group of the then ruling Labor Party Government after the expulsion of Premier Vince Gair. In 1962 the party became the Queensland section of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). The party continued to hold seats in the Queensland state parliament until 1972, then suffered a collapse in its vote and wound itself up in 1978. Duncan MacDonald (politician)
Duncan MacDonald (30 June 1885 – 28 September 1977) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacDonald was born at Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Thomas Duncan MacDonald Snr and his wife Christina (née McLean). He was educated at the Glasgow Academy University of Edinburgh and after arriving in Queensland in 1908 took up a variety of bush related jobs. He became the manager of a sugar plantation and then an inspector with the Bureau of Sugar Experiment stations. In his youth, Macdonald was a noted boxer and played first-class rugby union. He was a member of the Queensland Club and a councilor and steward on the Royal National Association.
