Electoral District Of Northern Downs
Northern Downs was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, one of the original 16 created in 1859. It covered the Dalby and Condamine areas. In the electoral redistribution of 1887, Northern Downs was split into two new electoral districts, the Electoral district of Dalby and the Electoral district of Murilla. Darling Downs
The Darling Downs is a farming region on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range in southern Queensland, Australia. The Downs are to the west of South East Queensland and are one of the major regions of Queensland. The name was generally applied to an area approximating to that of the Condamine River catchment upstream of Condamine township but is now applied to a wider region comprising the Southern Downs, Western Downs, Toowoomba and Goondiwindi local authority areas. The name Darling Downs was given in 1827 by Allan Cunningham, the first European explorer to reach the area and recognises the then Governor of New South Wales, Ralph Darling. The region has developed a strong and diverse agricultural industry largely due to the extensive areas of vertosols (cracking clay soils), particularly black vertosols, of moderate to high fertility and available water capacity. Joshua Peter Bell
Sir Joshua Peter Bell K.C.M.G. (19 January 1827 – 20 December 1881) was a pastoralist and parliamentarian from Queensland, Australia. His eldest son was barrister and parliamentarian Joshua Thomas Bell. Early life Bell was born in Kildare, Ireland, eldest son of Thomas Bell and his wife Sarah, née Alexander. The family emigrated to Australia around 1830. He attended the Sydney College and King's School, Parramatta. In 1848, Bell became joint manager of Jimbour Station in Darling Downs, Queensland with his brother Alexander after his father had taken over the lease of the property. Bell soon assumed sole control of the station due to his astute management that saw the station becoming one of the most respected in the area. Hugh Muir Nelson
Sir Hugh Muir Nelson, (31 December 1833 – 1 January 1906) was Premier of Queensland from 1893 to 1898. Early life Hugh Nelson was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, the son of William Lambie Nelson. Hugh was educated at the Edinburgh High School, and began a promising course under Sir William Hamilton at Edinburgh University. This was cut short when he went with his father to Queensland in 1853 and settled at Ipswich. Hugh Nelson obtained a position in a mercantile house, and then took up a pastoral life about six miles out of Ipswich. He then went to the Darling Downs to manage a station, and in 1870 married Janet, daughter of Duncan McIntyre. Afterwards Nelson took up Loudon station in the Dalby district. His father, William Lambie Nelson, was elected to the first Queensland parliament in 1860 but was unseated because he was a minister of religion. William Miles (Queensland Politician)
William Miles (5 May 1817 – 22 August 1887) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Personal life Miles was born on 5 May 1817 at Hails Quarry, near Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of William Miles and Alison (née Wilson). He married Mary Taylor in Colinton in 1838 and together they emigrated to New South Wales on the ship ''Duncan'' as assisted migrants and arrived at Sydney on 30 June 1838. He was employed on Mr. W. H. Chapman's station on the Macleay River, until 1852, when he commenced squatting on his own account on the Dawson River (Queensland), Dawson River, in the then colony of Queensland. William Miles died on 22 August 1887 at his home in Toowoomba, when an abscess in his ear lead to an inflammation of his brain. Henry Thorn
Henry Thorn (6 November 1840 – 19 April 1880) was a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Henry Thorn was born on 6 November 1840 in Ipswich, Queensland, the son of George Thorn (senior), a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and his wife Jane (née Handcock). Politics At the 1867 colonial election, Thorn was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the electoral district of Northern Downs. He held that seat until following election 16 months later where he was defeated by Joshua Peter Bell. At the 1873 election, he won back the seat of Northern Downs, which he held until he resigned on 30 October 1876. William Miles won the resulting by-election on 14 November 1876.
