Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. 1903 Tasmanian State Election
The 1903 Tasmanian state election was held on 2 April 1903 in the Australian state of Tasmania to elect 35 members of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Women got the right to vote at the election. Elliott Lewis, leader of the Ministerial group, entered the election as the incumbent Premier of Tasmania. At the election, the group lost 10 seats and Lewis lost his seat. The Opposition led by William Propsting won government. The Workers' Political League (the future Australian Labor Party) fielded candidates for the first time, winning three seats. John Earle became leader of the parliamentary party in 1906. The Electoral district of Selby was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Lilydale in Tasmania's northeastern region, and extended into what are today considered Launceston's outer eastern suburbs. The seat was created ahead of the Assembly's first election held in 1856. The east and northeast of the electorate became part of the new seat of Ringarooma at the 1886 election. The seat was abolished at the 1903 election, when it merged with the neighbouring seat of Evandale to form the new seat of North Esk. John Gibson (Australian Politician)
John Blackler Gibson (1857 - 5 December 1941) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from 1903 to 1906, representing the electorate of North Esk. Gibson was born at Evandale and was educated at Launceston. He was the grandson of prominent pastoralist and former convict David Gibson, and inherited the family's (now-historic) " Pleasant Banks" estate. He became, as with much of his family, a prominent sheepbreeder. Gibson was a long-serving member of the Evandale Municipal Council and was chairman of the local Licensing Bench, Warden of the local Police Court, and secretary of the local agricultural show at the time of his election. Gibson was elected to the House of Assembly at the 1903 election, defeating incumbent MPs Thomas Massey and John Charles von Steiglitz, whose seats had been amalgamated in a redistribution. Richard John Stevenson McKenzie (6 March 1850 – 13 October 1919) was an Australian politician. He was born in Launceston.
