The Electoral district of Evandale was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Evandale to the south of Launceston. The seat, created in 1856 under the name Morven, was established under the name Evandale ahead of the 1886 election. Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Evandale, Tasmania
Evandale is an historic town in northern Tasmania, Australia. It sits on the banks of the South Esk River, 18 km south of Launceston. Named after early colonial explorer and Surveyor-General George Evans, the town is famous for its late-Georgian and early-Victorian buildings with relatively untouched streetscape, a popular Sunday market and as a host to the annual World Penny Farthing bicycle Championships. 1903 Tasmanian State Election
The 1903 Tasmanian state election was held on 2 April 1903 in the Australian state of Tasmania to elect 35 members of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Women got the right to vote at the election. Elliott Lewis, leader of the Ministerial group, entered the election as the incumbent Premier of Tasmania. At the election, the group lost 10 seats and Lewis lost his seat. The Opposition led by William Propsting won government. The Workers' Political League (the future Australian Labor Party) fielded candidates for the first time, winning three seats. John Earle became leader of the parliamentary party in 1906. The Electoral district of Selby was a single-member electoral district of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. It centred on the town of Lilydale in Tasmania's northeastern region, and extended into what are today considered Launceston's outer eastern suburbs. The seat was created ahead of the Assembly's first election held in 1856. The east and northeast of the electorate became part of the new seat of Ringarooma at the 1886 election. The seat was abolished at the 1903 election, when it merged with the neighbouring seat of Evandale to form the new seat of North Esk. John Falkiner
John William Falkiner (16 May 1848 – 14 November 1927) was an Australian politician. Falkiner was born in Epping Forest in Tasmania in 1848. In 1882 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly, representing the seat of Morven. In 1886 his seat was replaced by Evandale, which he represented until his defeat in 1891.
