Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Evandale, Tasmania
Evandale is an historic town in northern Tasmania, Australia. It sits on the banks of the South Esk River, 18 km south of Launceston. Named after early colonial explorer and Surveyor-General George Evans, the town is famous for its late-Georgian and early-Victorian buildings with relatively untouched streetscape, a popular Sunday market and as a host to the annual World Penny Farthing bicycle Championships. 1856 Tasmanian Colonial Election
The 1856 Tasmanian colonial elections took place from 8 to 22 September 1856 (for the House of Assembly) and 6 to 17 October 1856 (for the Legislative Council). The elections were the first to be held under the ''Electoral Act 1856'', which established responsible government in Tasmania (until 1 January 1856 called Van Diemen's Land) and created a bicameral parliament consisting of the 30-member Tasmanian House of Assembly and the 15-member Tasmanian Legislative Council. Members were elected using first-past-the-post voting. Following the election, William Champ became the first Premier of Tasmania on 1 November 1856, but his government lasted only 117 days. The seat, created in 1856 under the name Morven, was established under the name Evandale ahead of the 1886 election. The son of Francis Innes, army officer, and his wife Prudence, ''née'' Edgerleyan, Innes was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Innes was educated at Heriot's, Edinburgh, and Kelso Grammar School in Kelso. On leaving school he was employed by his uncle, manager of estates for his relation, the Duke of Roxburghe. In 1836, Innes emigrated to Tasmania where he arrived in Hobart in 1837, joining the ''Hobart Town Courier''. A few years later he returned to Great Britain, and contributed to the press in London, and to the ''Penny Cyclopaedia''. John Falkiner
John William Falkiner (16 May 1848 – 14 November 1927) was an Australian politician. Falkiner was born in Epping Forest in Tasmania in 1848. In 1882 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly, representing the seat of Morven. In 1886 his seat was replaced by Evandale, which he represented until his defeat in 1891.
