Mermaid Beach is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The district is based in the southern part of the Gold Coast. Geography A compact urban, coastal electorate, Mermaid Beach includes the Gold Coast suburbs of Mermaid Beach, Mermaid Waters, Broadbeach Waters, Merrimac, Florida Keys, Miami Keys and parts of Robina. History Essentially a new name for the former district of Robina, Mermaid Beach was first created for the 2009 state election. Ray Stevens (politician)
Raymond Alexander Stevens (born 1 February 1953) is an Australian politician who was until 2016 the Manager of Opposition Business in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Early life Born in Townsville, he received a Bachelor of Arts in Finance and Economics from James Cook University and Macquarie University, and was admitted to the Australian Association of Accountants in 1974, being employed by Price Waterhouse in Sydney. He returned to the family station, "Doncaster" in Richmond, before moving to the Gold Coast in 1979. He ran local businesses in the area and was a councillor on Albert Shire Council from 1988 to 1994, serving as Mayor in 1994. After the amalgamation of Albert and Gold Coast, he was mayor of the latter from 1995 to 1997. 2009 Queensland State Election
The 2009 Queensland state election was held on 21 March 2009 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The election saw the incumbent Labor government led by Premier Anna Bligh defeat the Liberal National Party of Queensland led by Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg, and gain a fifth consecutive term in office for her party. Bligh thus became the first female Premier of any Australian State elected in her own right. The 2009 election marked the eighth consecutive victory of Labor in a general election since 1989, although it was out of office between 1996 and 1998 as a direct result of the 1996 Mundingburra by-election. Electoral District Of Robina
Robina was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 2001 to 2009. The district was located in the southern part of the Gold Coast, and named for the suburb of Robina. It also included parts of the Gold Coast suburbs of Broadbeach Waters, Merrimac, Clear Island Waters, Mermaid Waters and Varsity Lakes. The district's first member was Bob Quinn, leader of the Liberal Party from 2001 to 2006. He was succeeded by fellow Liberal Ray Stevens at the 2006 state election. At the 2009 Queensland state election, the name Robina was discarded when most of its namesake suburb was redistributed to Mudgeeraba. The remainder of the old Robina was renamed Mermaid Beach.
