Division Of Griffith
The Division of Griffith is an electoral division for the Australian House of Representatives. The division covers the inner southern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland. History The division is named after Sir Samuel Griffith, former politician and a principal author of the Constitution of Australia. Griffith was created in 1934, replacing the seat of Oxley which had been established in 1900. Terri Butler retained the seat for Labor at the 2014 Griffith by-election on 8 February, caused by the resignation of the previous member, former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who held the seat from 1998 until his resignation in November 2013. Griffith has a growing Greens vote, with the party winning 5 booths on primary vote at the 2019 federal election and a further 4 booths in which the party came at a close second. Graeme McDougall
Graeme Robert McDougall (born 21 November 1946) is an Australian politician and businessman. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1996 to 1998, representing the Queensland seat of Griffith for the Liberal Party. He also served on Brisbane City Council. Early life McDougall was born on 21 November 1946 in Taree, New South Wales. He holds an associate diploma in business management from East Sydney Technical College. Prior to entering politics he was a senior manager in the plastics industry and later ran a hardware store. Politics McDougall served on the Brisbane City Council from 1988 to 1996. He was chairman of the organising committee for the 1988 FINA World Masters Championships which Brisbane hosted. At the 1993 federal election, McDougall served as chair of the Liberal Party's campaign committee in Queensland. Ross Vasta
Ross Xavier Vasta (born 8 October 1966) is an Australian politician who has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2010, representing the Division of Bonner for the Liberal Party. He previously held the same seat from 2004 to 2007. Early life Vasta is the son of Angelo Vasta, a former judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland who was stood down after his friendship with the disgraced Queensland Police Commissioner Terence Lewis became known. His parents were both born in Innisfail, Queensland, while his grandparents were all born in Sicily. His mother registered him as an Italian citizen by descent when he was a child, but he renounced it prior to his first run for parliament in 2001. Peter Hore is an Australian-born man best known for public stunts such as disrupting the 1997 Melbourne Cup by running onto the track during the race, interrupting a tennis match at the Australian Open, and gate-crashing celebrity funerals. During a World Cup football qualifying match between the national teams of Australia and Iran in 1997, Hore ran onto the field and cut the Iranian team's net. According to ''ESPN FC'', the resulting delay was a turning point in the match, allowing the Iranian team to "regain their composure" and go on to win. Max Chandler-Mather ( ; born 1991–1992) is an Australian politician and trade unionist. He is the Greens member for the Division of Griffith following the 2022 Australian federal election, having defeated the incumbent Australian Labor Party member Terri Butler. A resident of Woolloongabba, Chandler-Mather is a member of the Australian Greens and worked for the party prior to being elected to parliament. Early life and career Chandler-Mather grew up in the suburb of West End. His parents, Tim Mather and Kim Chandler, were members of the Australian Labor Party. Chandler-Mather completed a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in History at the University of Queensland. Terri Butler
Terri Megan Butler (born 28 November 1977) is a former Australian politician and a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Butler formerly represented the Division of Griffith in the House of Representatives from the 2014 by-election to the 2022 federal election. She worked as an industrial lawyer prior to entering parliament. Early life Butler was born in Cairns, Queensland, the daughter of Allison and Larry Butler. She holds the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws ( Hons.) from the Queensland University of Technology. She also studied at James Cook University. As a student she worked for an engineering firm, at an aluminium factory and for the Australian Services Union. Butler completed her articles of clerkship in 2003 and subsequently worked as an industrial lawyer.
