Electoral District Of Rockhampton
Rockhampton is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. Wedged between the electoral districts of Keppel to the east and Mirani to the west, Rockhampton encompasses the bulk of the regional city of Rockhampton and many of its outlying developed areas, including the community of Gracemere. History In 1864, the ''Additional Members Act'' created six additional electoral districts, each returning 1 member: * Clermont * Kennedy * Maryborough * Mitchell * Rockhampton * Warrego The first elections in these six electorates were held in 1865 (that is, during a parliamentary term and not as part of a general election across Queensland). The nomination date for the election in Rockhampton was 30 January 1865 and the election was held on 1 February 1865. Barry O'Rourke
Barry Leonard O'Rourke (born 17 November 1963) is an Australian politician. He has been the Labor member for Rockhampton in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2017. Career Following the unexpected retirement of Labor MP Bill Byrne for health reasons, O'Rourke contested Labor preselection for Byrne's seat of Rockhampton. Charles Fitzsimmons (Queensland Politician)
Charles Fitzsimmons (1802—1876) was an Irish-born politician and sugar farmer in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Charles Fitzsimmons was born in 1802 in County Cavan, Ireland, the son of James Fitzsimmons and his wife Margaret (née Lynch). Politics Fitzsimmons was elected as Member for Port Curtis in the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the inaugural colonial election on 4 May 1860. He held that seat until he resigned on 3 September 1861; Alfred Sandeman won the resulting by-election on 15 October 1861. Under the Additional Members Act 1864, the seats of Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego were created. By-elections were held to fill the new seats on 18 March 1865. William Kidston
William Kidston (17 August 1849 – 25 October 1919) was an Australian bookseller, politician and Premier of Queensland, from January 1906 to November 1907 and again from February 1908 to February 1911. Early life William Kidston was born in Falkirk, Scotland on 17 August 1849, the son of an ironworker. He became an apprentice ironmoulder at age 13. He married Margaret Scott in 1874. Dissatisfied with ironmoulding, he emigrated to New South Wales with his family in 1882, and moved again to Queensland, arriving in Rockhampton at 1883. In Rockhampton, Kidston started a new career as a bookseller. During the early 1890s, growing industrial unrest pitted the newly formed trade union movement against the conservative colonial government led by Thomas McIlwraith in a series of strikes. William Pattison (Queensland Politician)
Hon. William Pattison (23 May 1830 – 8 June 1896) was a politician in colonial Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Pattison was born in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (later renamed Tasmania) but emigrated to Victoria and was a councillor of the city of Melbourne. In August 1864, Pattison went to Queensland, and commenced business at Rockhampton, where he acquired a large interest in the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company. Politics Pattison, who has been Mayor of Rockhampton, succeeded Archibald Archer in the representation of Blackall in 1886, was elected for Rockhampton in 1888, and was a minister without portfolio in the Thomas McIlwraith ministry from June to November 1888. John Ferguson (Australian Politician)
John Ferguson (15 March 1830 – 30 March 1906) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. Born in Kenmore, Perthshire, he received a primary education before becoming a carpenter. He migrated to Australia in 1855, becoming a goldminer and carpenter, and then a builder and contractor at Rockhampton in Queensland. He served on Rockhampton Council, including a period as mayor in 1880–1881. In 1881 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for Rockhampton, holding the seat until 1888. In 1894 he was appointed to the Queensland Legislative Council. He successfully contested the Australian Senate in the 1901 federal election for the Free Trade Party, but did not resign his seat in the Legislative Council. Thomas Macdonald-Paterson
Thomas Macdonald-Paterson (9 May 1844 – 21 March 1906) was an Australian politician, a member of the Parliament of Queensland, and later, the Parliament of Australia. Early life Macdonald-Paterson was born in Glasgow, Scotland, he was educated there privately before migrating to Australia in 1861, where he became a butcher, speculator and lawyer. Politics In 1878 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the member for Rockhampton; he transferred to Moreton in 1883 and to the Legislative Council in 1885, remaining there until 1887. He was a delegate to the Federation Convention of 1891, and returned to the Legislative Assembly in 1896 as the member for North Brisbane. In 1901 he transferred to federal politics, winning the Australian House of Representatives seat of Brisbane. William Rea (politician)
William Rea (1816–1881) was a stock and station agent and a politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life William Rea was born in Belfast in 1816. He came to Australia in about 1841 where he worked in stock and station agency business with firms which had branches in New South Wales and New Zealand. Around the time of the separation of Queensland (circa 1859), he moved to Rockhampton where he established his own stock and station agency business with Mr Rankin. Politics Rea was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly in the Electorate of Rockhampton on 15 November 1878. He held the seat until his death on 21 September 1881. Later life Rea died on 21 September 1881 in his temporary residence at Martin Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane. John MacFarlane (Queensland Politician)
John MacFarlane (1823 – 10 April 1880) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacFarlane was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of David Macfarlane and his wife Margaret (née Gibb). He arrived in Victoria around 1840 where he engaged in Squatting pursuits. In 1865 he moved to Queensland and as a member of a Victorian firm, took up Oakey Creek run on the Mackenzie River in Central Queensland. Like most stations in the area it proved unsuitable for sheep and after four years he moved to Rockhampton where he established a successful stock and station agent. Charles Hardie Buzacott (1 August 1835 – 19 July 1918) was an Australian journalist, publisher and politician. Early life Buzacott was born in Torrington, Devonshire, England, son of James Buzacott and his wife Ann, ''née'' Hitchcock. He migrated with his elder brother William to Sydney in 1852. Journalism In Sydney, Charles joined the ''Empire'' newspaper and learnt to be a compositor. In 1860 he went to Maryborough, Queensland, and established the ''Maryborough Chronicle'', selling it four years later. Buzacott then went to the Clermont goldfield, and started the ''Peak Downs Telegram'', which he edited. In 1869 Buzacott sold his interest in the ''Telegram'' and moved to Gladstone where he took over the ''Observer''. Alexander Fyfe (1826 – 2 May 1903) was a Scottish-born settler of Victoria, Australia, who became a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Victorian Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Fyfe was born in Scotland, the son of Jane Nicholson Bailliff. Fyfe emigrated to Australia, arriving in Melbourne in January 1848 aboard the ''Stag'' and settled in Geelong.
