Ningaloo was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1996 to 2005. The district was based in the rural north-west of Western Australia. Its population centres included Carnarvon, Cue, Denham, Exmouth, Gascoyne Junction, Meekatharra, Mount Magnet, Murchison, Nanutarra, Newman, Sandstone and Yalgoo. Ningaloo Reef
The Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage Site located in the north west coastal region of Western Australia. The heritage-listed area is located approximately north of Perth, along the East Indian Ocean. The distinctive Ningaloo Reef that fringes the Ningaloo Coast is long and is Australia's largest fringing coral reef and the only large reef positioned very close to a landmass. The Muiron Islands and Cape Farquhar are within this coastal zone. The coast and reef draw their name from the Australian Aboriginal Wajarri language word ''ningaloo'' meaning "promontory", "deepwater", or "high land jutting into the sea". Nanutarra, Western Australia
Nanutarra is a locality in Western Australia adjacent to where the Ashburton river is crossed by the North West Coastal Highway. It is also close to the turn-off for State Route 136 to Paraburdoo and Tom Price. It is south of the Onslow turn-off in the Cane River conservation park where it is on either side of the highway. Etymology The name is related to the locality, the pastoral lease Nanutarra Station, the bridge over the Ashburton river, the mine and the roadhouse. Murchison-Eyre was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1890 to 1989 and again from 2005 to 2008. Known as Murchison until 1968, it was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 election. The district was located in the Western Australian outback. Rod Sweetman
Rodney Noel Sweetman (born 21 June 1953) is a former Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 2005. Sweetman was born in the Perth suburb of Subiaco. He was first elected to state parliament at the 1996 state election winning the seat of Ningaloo and was subsequently re-elected to the same seat at the 2001 state election. Ningaloo was abolished ahead of the 2005 state election with its territory split between Murchison-Eyre and the new seat of North West Coastal. Sweetman chose to contest neither seat, instead unsuccessfully seeking Liberal preselection in more winnable districts elsewhere. He then sought endorsement from the Family First Party but was rejected due to his vote in support of decriminalising abortion. Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 14 December 1996 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop since 15 October 1996. Yalgoo, Western Australia
Yalgoo is a town in the Mid-west region, north-north-east of Perth, Western Australia and east-north-east of Mullewa. Yalgoo is in the local government area of the Shire of Yalgoo. Before it was settled as a town the Yalgoo area was used as grazing land for European settlers including the Morrissey and Broad families. Flocks of sheep were herded onto the rich pastures during the wet growing season and driven back to coastal properties for shearing before summer. Over time the graziers saw the value in the Yalgoo land and began to establish the first sheep stations. History Gold was discovered in the area in the early 1890s, and by 1895 there were 120 men working the diggings and buildings being erected. The goldfield warden asked for a townsite to be surveyed and gazetted, and following survey the townsite of Yalgu was gazetted in January 1896. Sandstone is a small town in the Mid West region of Western Australia east of Mount Magnet and north of the state capital, Perth.
