Electoral District Of Macalister
Macalister is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was created in the 2017 redistribution, and was first contested at the 2017 Queensland state election. It is named after the second Queensland Premier, Arthur Macalister. Located in Logan City, Macalister consists of the suburbs of Bahrs Scrub, Bannockburn, Beenleigh, Carbrook, Cornubia, Eagleby, Edens Landing, Holmview, Mount Warren Park, Windaroo and parts of the suburbs of Loganholme and Waterford. It takes in areas from the previous districts of Albert, Coomera, Redlands, Springwood and Waterford. Based on the results from the 2015 Queensland state election, Macalister was estimated to be a fairly safe seat for the Labor Party with a margin of 6.4% in the leadup to the 2017 Queensland state election. Melissa McMahon
Melissa Fay McMahon (born 15 May 1976) is an Australian politician. She has been the Labor member for Macalister in the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 2017. She is a member of the Parliamentary Crime and Corruption Committee (PCCC) and the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee (LACSC) of the Queensland Parliament. Career Prior to her election to the Queensland Parliament, McMahon was a major in the Australian Army working in CIMIC, military police, information operations and career management. She served overseas in Timor-Leste in 2008 and 2011. She was also a senior sergeant in the Queensland Police Service, having worked on the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. McMahon has bachelor's degrees in behavioural science, policing and secondary education with a diploma of public safety and qualifications in training and education. Beenleigh, Queensland
Beenleigh is a town and suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. In the , the suburb of Beenleigh had a population of 8,252 people. A government survey for the new town was conducted in 1866. The town is the terminus for the Beenleigh railway line, which first opened in 1885 and a stop on the South Coast railway line, which reached Southport in 1889. Beenleigh was the administrative centre of the former Shire of Albert. It is known for the heritage-listed tourist attraction called the Beenleigh Artisan Distillery. In recent years it has seen many high rise developments. Geography Beenleigh and adjoining suburbs are located near the confluence of the Logan and Albert Rivers. 2015 Queensland State Election
The 2015 Queensland state election was held on 31 January 2015 to elect all 89 members of the unicameral Legislative Assembly of Queensland. The centre-right Liberal National Party (LNP), led by Premier Campbell Newman, attempted to win a second term but was defeated by the opposition centre-left Australian Labor Party (ALP), led by Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk. Labor formed a minority government with the support of the lone independent MP in the chamber, Peter Wellington. It is only the seventh change of government in Queensland since 1915, and only the third time since 1932 that a sitting government in the state has failed to win a second term. Electoral District Of Albert
Albert was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland which existed from 1887 to 1949 and 1959 to 2017. Albert was named for the Albert River, which runs through the electorate and separates Logan City from City of Gold Coast. It was first created in a redistribution in 1887 ahead of the 1888 colonial election and continued to exist (with various boundary alterations) until 1949, when the Darlington and Southport electorates were created. In 1959, the electorate was established again. The 1971 and 1977 redistributions greatly reduced the area of the electorate and minor changes were made in 1991, including the loss of Carbrook in the north and coastal areas below Paradise Point in the south. Its consistently changing boundaries together with its existence in a high-growth area do not provide consistent political leanings over time, although it showed more inclination towards the Labor Party over time than any other Gold Coast seat. Waterford is a town and suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. In the , the suburb of Waterford had a population of 5,484 people. Geography The western side of the suburb follows the Logan River while the southern edge draws a straight line along Dairy Creek Road. Here it connects to Gardiner Road which then joins Logan River Road. Waterford-Tamborine Road (State Route 95) starts in the north of Waterford and exits to the south. History The town is believed to be named by Irish settlers after Waterford in Ireland because of a ford in the Logan River. The name was recorded by surveyor William Fryar on 11 June 1866. Loganholme is a suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. In the , Loganholme had a population of 6,303 people. The majority of the land is used for houses while it has range of other uses. Geography The suburb is bisected by the Pacific Motorway and the Logan Motorway which aligns with a small section of the northern boundary. Holmview is a residential suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. In the , Holmview had a population of 2,358 people. Geography It is located south-west of Brisbane, the state capital. Much of the suburb is undeveloped bush. Part of the suburb's northern border is marked by the Logan River. The Beenleigh railway line passes through this northern section. The Logan River Road, a major arterial, crosses Holmview from east to west. History On 1 May 1975, Holmview was designed a locality by Queensland Place Names Board. Edens Landing is a suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. In the , Edens Landing had a population of 5,094 people. History The current suburb of Edens Landing is a recent settlement developed by Leighton Holdings. It was originally called Holmview Heights. There is a street named after the original developers, Leighton Drive. Edens Landing was established in 1984-5 when Henry Edens, a man involved in the timber industry, allowed Leighton Holdings to clear the land, this was the start of many business dealings that lead to Edens acquiring the land and beginning the residential settlement.
