Electoral District Of Hawthorne
Hawthorne was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1960 to 1972. It was established in the redistribution before the 1960 election from parts of the former district of Norman and the district of Bulimba. It was abolished ahead of the 1972 election and its areas absorbed into surrounding districts, mostly Bulimba. Hawthorne, Queensland
Hawthorne is a suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hawthorne had a population of 4,989 people. Geography Hawthorne is located by road east of the CBD. Toponymy There are two theories about the name of the suburb. One is that butcher William Baynes purchased land in the area in 1875 and named the area after Hawthorn in Melbourne where he lived before his arrival in Queensland in 1859. An alternative theory is that Baynes planted many hawthorne bushes in the 1850s and 1860s. History Hawthorne started as a farming district in the 1860s, and was gradually subdivided as Brisbane grew. This was helped by the introduction of ferry and tram services. In October 1885 the "Galloway's Hill Estate" was advertised to be auctioned by Arthur Martin & Co. The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. However, in the "state sphere", it would continue to exist individually under its own banner. In July 1949, the QPP was renamed to reflect its status as the Queensland division of the Liberal Party. Bill Kaus
William Bernard Kaus (24 May 1923 – 20 December 2006) was a businessman and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Kaus was born at Kangaroo Point, Queensland, to parents William Rahman Kaus and his wife Doreen May (née Baker). He was involved in the family business, Kaus Bros Bedding Manufacturers. In World War II he joined the Royal Australian Air Force and was assigned as a Flying officer to the 161 Squadron. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and France's highest honour, the Legion of Honour in 2005. On 12 June 1948 Kaus married Neth Florette Hutchinson and together had two sons and two daughters (one of whom was the federal MP Andrea West).
