Eleanor Goodrich
Eleanor Kathleen Goodrich OBE (1888 – 1988) was a British politician and activist. Born in Clapton, as Eleanor Kathleen Harslett, her father was a stage manager, and both of her parents were close friends with Herbert Morrison. She became a suffragette and a teacher, active in the National Union of Women Teachers. In 1934, Goodrich was elected for the Labour Party to the council of the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth, one of the first party members to win a seat in the borough. She won a seat in Balham and Tooting at the 1946 London County Council election. From 1947 until 1949, she also served as Mayor of Wandsworth, the first woman from the Labour Party to hold the post. The Balham and Tooting constituency was abolished for the 1949 London County Council election, and Goodrich instead stood unsuccessfully in Wandsworth Central. Clapton, London
Clapton is a district of East London, England, in the London Borough of Hackney. Clapton is divided into Upper Clapton, in the north, and Lower Clapton to the south. Clapton railway station lies north-east of Charing Cross. Geography and origins The hamlet of Clapton emerged in the manor and Ancient Parish of Hackney. Origins The hamlet of Clapton was, from 1339 (when first recorded) until the 18th century normally rendered as Clopton, meaning the "farm on the hill". The Old English ''clop'' - "lump" or "hill" - presumably denoted the high ground which rises from the River Lea. Clapton grew up as a linear hamlet along the road subsequently known as Lower and Upper Clapton Road. 1955 London County Council Election
An election to the County Council of London took place on 31 March 1955. The council was elected by First Past the Post with each elector having three votes in the three-member seats. The Conservative Party made significant gains, but the Labour Party retained a substantial majority. The size of the council was cut by three members, with Fulham East, Fulham West and Hammersmith South abolished, and replaced in part by the new constituencies of Barons Court and Fulham. This mirrored changes to constituencies for the House of Commons which were implemented at the 1955 general election, shortly afterwards. Putney Arts Theatre ("PAT") is based in Putney, in the London Borough of Wandsworth and operates as a community space specialising in theatre productions.
