Elder Creek (Tehama County)
Elder Creek is a major stream in Tehama County, California and a tributary of the Sacramento River. It originates at the confluence of its North, Middle and South Forks, which begin in the Mendocino National Forest, and flows east to its confluence with the Sacramento River about a mile (1.6 km) east of Gerber and north of Tehama. Measured to the head of its longest tributary, the South Fork, Elder Creek has a total length of , draining a watershed of about . Like the other streams draining this part of the western Sacramento Valley, Elder Creek is a highly seasonal stream that flows only during the winter and spring. California Coast Ranges
The Coast Ranges of California span from Del Norte or Humboldt County, California, south to Santa Barbara County. The other three coastal California mountain ranges are the Transverse Ranges, Peninsular Ranges and the Klamath Mountains. Mendocino National Forest
The Mendocino National Forest is located in the Coastal Mountain Range in northwestern California and comprises 913,306 acres (3,696 km2). It is the only national forest in the state of California without a major paved road entering it. There are a variety of recreational opportunities — camping, hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, backpacking, boating, fishing, hunting, nature study, photography, and off-highway vehicle travel. The forest lies in parts of six counties. In descending order of forestland area they are Lake, Glenn, Mendocino, Tehama, Trinity, and Colusa counties. The Sacramento River ( es, Río Sacramento) is the principal river of Northern California in the United States and is the largest river in California. Rising in the Klamath Mountains, the river flows south for before reaching the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta and San Francisco Bay. Gerber is a census-designated place (CDP) in Tehama County, California. Gerber sits at an elevation of . The 2010 United States census reported Gerber's population was 1,060. History Gerber was platted in 1910, and named after the Gerber family, original owners of the town site. A post office has been in operation at Gerber since 1916. In the early years, Gerber was a center supporting ranchers and alfalfa growers. Between 1916 and 1965, Gerber was the location of a division point on the Southern Pacific Railroad between the Sacramento and Shasta Divisions. Situated two miles north of the junction of the West Valley Line to Davis and the East Valley Line to Sacramento via Chico and Marysville, facilities included steam locomotive fueling, repair and crew-change. The county seat and largest city is Red Bluff. Tehama (Wintun for "high water") is a city in Tehama County, California, United States. The population was 418 at the 2010 census, down from 432 at the 2000 census. Etymology Tehama is most commonly believed to be derived from the Wintun word for "high water", though there are others definitions that have been proposed such as "low land", "salmon", "mother nature" or "shallow" — any of which would be an accurate description of a location where the river is normally shallow enough to ford, where fishermen are a common sight during the salmon run, and winter floods are a regular occurrence. ''Sambucus'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Adoxaceae. The various species are commonly called elder or elderberry. The genus was formerly placed in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae, but was reclassified as Adoxaceae due to genetic and morphological comparisons to plants in the genus ''Adoxa''.
