Elanus Leucurus
The white-tailed kite (''Elanus leucurus'') is a small raptor found in western North America and parts of South America. It replaces the related Old World black-winged kite in its native range. Taxonomy The white-tailed kite was described in 1818 by the French ornithologist Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot under the binomial name ''Milvus leucurus'' with the type locality as Paraguay. It is now one of four species in the genus '' Elanus'' which was introduced in 1809 by the French zoologist Jules-César Savigny. The word ''Elanus'' is from Ancient Greek ''elanos'' for a "kite". The specific epithet ''leucurus'' is from the Ancient Greek ''leukouros'' for "white-tailed": ''leukos'' is "white" and ''oura'' is "tail". Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot
Louis Pierre Vieillot (10 May 1748, Yvetot – 24 August 1830, Sotteville-lès-Rouen) was a French ornithologist. Vieillot is the author of the first scientific descriptions and Linnaean names of a number of birds, including species he collected himself in the West Indies and North America and South American species discovered but not formally named by Félix de Azara and his translator Sonnini de Manoncourt. He was among the first ornithologists to study changes in plumage and one of the first to study live birds. At least 77 of the genera erected by Vieillot are still in use. Biography Vieillot was born in Yvetot. He represented his family's business interests in Saint-Domingue (Haiti) on Hispaniola, but fled to the United States during the Haitian rebellions that followed the French Revolution. San Francisco Bay
San Francisco Bay is a large tidal estuary in the U.S. state of California, and gives its name to the San Francisco Bay Area.
