Benin Basketball Super League
The Benin Basketball Super League (french: Super Ligue de Basket-ball du Bénin), for sponsorships known as the YouZou Ligue Pro, is the highest level basketball league in Benin. The competition is organised annually by the Fédération Beninoise de Basket-ball. In 2020 the league became professional as the Benisese government under President Patrice Talon passed a law that required all sports clubs to be operated as companies. The move also allowed foreign players to compete in the league. Three years later, in May 2023, the league received a substantial subsidy from the Beninese government to further develop the sport in the country. The association received $323,000 (100m CFA franc) which was divided over the league and its nine teams. The champions of each season qualify for the Road to BAL. Porto-Novo (Portuguese: "New Port", , ; yo, Àjàṣẹ́, ), also known as Hogbonu and Ajashe, is the capital of Benin. The commune covers an area of and as of 2002 had a population of 223,552 people. The FIBA Africa Basketball League (formerly named the FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup) was the highest caliber men's professional basketball competition for clubs until 2020, organized by the FIBA Africa and played by the champions of the leagues of the African countries. The league was replaced by the Basketball Africa League (BAL) from 2020. History The competition was founded in 1971. A year later, in 1972, Hit Trésor SC won the inaugural championship. 2018–19 Africa Basketball League
The 2019 FIBA Africa Basketball League was the 33nd edition of FIBA Africa's premier club Basketball tournament and the 1st under the new format and new name. The season saw an expansion from twelve to sixteen teams. The season began on February 8, 2019, and ended on May 26, 2019, with the conclusion of the Final Four. The Final Four was hosted at the Kilamba Arena in Luanda, Angola. It was the last season of the league as the competition was replaced by the Basketball Africa League (BAL), a new competition jointly established by the National Basketball Association (NBA) and FIBA. Competition format FIBA Africa has increased the number of participating teams from twelve to sixteen.
