Elaea (Aeolis)
Elaea ( grc, Ἐλαία and Ἐλέα) was an ancient city of Aeolis, Asia, the port of Pergamum. According to the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World, it was located near the modern town of Zeytindağ, İzmir Province, Turkey. The ruins of the silted port's breakwater can be seen on satellite maps at 38°56'35.54"N 27°2'16.34"E. According to the present text of Stephanus of Byzantium, it was also called Cidaenis ( grc, Κιδαινίς), and was founded by Menestheus; but it seems likely that there is some error in the reading Cidaenis. Strabo places Elaea south of the river Caicus, 12 stadia from the river, and 120 stadia from Pergamum. The Caicus enters a bay, which was called Elaiticus Sinus, or the bay of Elaea. Strabo calls the bay of Elaea part of the Bay of Adramyttium, but incorrectly. Elaea (Epirus)
Elaea or Elaia ( grc, Ἐλαία), also Elea (Ἐλέα), was a town of Thesprotia in ancient Epirus toward the mouth of the Acheron river. The town is mentioned by Ptolemy. Thucydides calls the surrounding district Elaeatis (Ἐλαιατις) and indicates that Ephyra was in the territory of Elaea. Its port was Elaias Limen, literally the "Bay of Elaea", which the ''Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax'' asserts was the main port of Thesprotia. Coins ascribed to the town, with the inscription "ΕΛΕΑΤΑΝ" or "ΕΛΕΑΙ", have been found that have been dated . The town's site is identified as near Chrysavgi, where archaeological exploration has taken place. Elaea (promontory Of Crete)
Elaea or Elaia ( el, Ελαία) was the ancient name of a promontory on the northeast coast of Cyprus, which was mentioned by Ptolemy, (Ptol. v. 14. § 3) and is mapped by the Barrington Atlas on the southeast side of the Karpas Peninsula. A misprint in Smith's Dictionary of Greek and Roman Geography places it on Crete, but at a location, Chaule-burnau, mapped by Richard Pococke to Karpas on Cyprus. The confusion with Crete has caused the place name to be linked to a temple of Zeus Diktaios near the modern town of Palaikastron. Elaea (mythology)
In Greek mythology, Elaea ( grc, Ἐλαία, Elaia, olive) is an Attic girl who won the favour of Athena thanks to her impressive athletic achievements and her beauty, and the envy of the other Atticans for the same reason. Her story shares many elements with that of Myrsine. Her brief tale survives in the works of Nicolaus Sophista, a Greek sophist and rhetor who lived during the fifth century AD. Mythology Elaea was an extremely athletic girl who outdid all girls in beauty and all boys in strength, winning herself the favour and love of Athena, the virgin goddess of wisdom and patron-goddess of Attica. Elaea beat all her opponents in both the ring and the race, who grew resentful of her. Many of her fellow athletes whom she had beaten then decided to murder her out of envy. Gonypetinae
The ''Gonypetidae'' are a new (2019) family of praying mantids, based on the type genus '' Gonypeta''. The name was created by Westwood and it has been revived as part of a major revision of mantid taxonomy; the subfamily Iridopteryginae having been moved here from the obsolete family Iridopterygidae. The Gonypetinae include Asian genera transferred from the obsolete taxa Amelinae and Liturgusidae. The new placement is in superfamily Gonypetoidea (of group Cernomantodea) and infraorder Schizomantodea. Genera in this family have been recorded from: NE Africa, the Middle East, India, Indochina, Malesia through to New Guinea.
