''El tesoro de la isla Maciel'' (''The Treasure of Maciel Island'') is a 1941 Argentine comedy film directed by Manuel Romero. Production The 73-minute black and white Lumiton film was directed and written by Manuel Romero. It is an adaptation of a popular stage play. Music is by Rodolfo Sciammarella and cinematography by Hugo Chiesa. The film was released in Argentina on 8 July 1941. It stars Luis Arata, Severo Fernández and Alberto Bello. Synopsis A retired sea captain is profoundly bored. His sons hope to wake him up by staging a fake treasure hunt. This turns into a difficult journey to the Río de la Plata islands. The family are unaware that their backyard holds a valuable oil well. The farce is fast-paced, only slightly hampered by a romantic subplot. Manuel Romero (director)
Manuel Romeo (September 21, 1891 – October 3, 1954 in Buenos Aires) was an Argentine film director, screenwriter, dramatist and score composer, and one of the influential directors in the cinema of Argentina of the classic era. He directed and wrote over 50 films between 1931 and 1951 even composing the musical scores for several. He was a pioneer of Variety Theatre, and one of the few tango lyrical writers that has reached timeless classical success. When he was a teenager, he began his journalist job in the Magacine Fray Mochoy, and in the newspapers Crítica y Última Hora. His first play, "Teatro breve" is from 1919 with the collaboration of Ivo Pelay. He wrote 180 more. In 1922 the most famous, "El bailarín del cabaret", was staged with the César Ratti's company, where Corsini triunfó (had a success) with "Patotero sentimental". Silvana Roth (also known as Silvana Maria Rota, February 17, 1924 – April 3, 2010) was an Argentine stage and film actress.Melgosa p.55 A star of the Golden Age of Argentine Cinema, she appeared in twenty six films between 1940 and 1971. Sources differ over her place of birth, with some saying Genoa in Italy and others Buenos Aires. Politically Roth was a staunch Peronist. She served in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies between 1973 and 1976 before being ousted after the coup that year.
