Flag Of Guatemala
The flag of Guatemala, often referred to as "Pabellón Nacional" (literally, "National Flag") or "Azul y Blanco" ("Blue and White") features two colors: Sky blue and white. The two Sky blue stripes represent the fact that Guatemala is a land located between two oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean (Caribbean sea); and the sky over the country (see Guatemala's national anthem). The white signifies peace and purity. The blue and white colors, like those of several other countries in the region, are based on the flag of the former Federal Republic of Central America. San Marcos Department
San Marcos is a department in northwestern Guatemala, on the Pacific Ocean and along the western Guatemala-Mexico border. The department's capital is the city of San Marcos. History Colonial period The Spanish conquest of Guatemalan Highlands occurred in the 1520s, followed by the establishment of the Province of Tecusitlán and Lacandón within the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Candacuchex, a settlement of the Mayan Mam people, became the site of the city of San Marcos, established in 1533. El Tumbador
El Tumbador is a town and municipality in the San Marcos department of Guatemala. The population is mostly of Mam people, who speak their own language. It was founded in 1878. The main source of income is agriculture—farming and animal husbandry. People produce mostly coffee, but also sugarcane, beans, cassava, fruits and spices—cardamom and macadamia. Cattle, horses, sheep and goats are bred in the area as well. El Tumbador gave its name to the Belgian Non-governmental organization Tumbador vzw that used to support a project in the municipality. San Rafael Pie De La Cuesta
San Rafael Pie de la Cuesta () is a municipality in the San Marcos department of Guatemala. A small town of 4,320 residents. Red tiled roofs and abundant flowering trees are found there. It is located 13 km southwest of San Marcos. The English translation of the town's name is "At the foot of the steep slope." That is because the town is found along a winding, steep road from San Rafael which rises from 900 meters to 2500 meters in only 15 km. The town is in the northern department of San Marcos, Guatemala, bordering Mexico. San Rafael Pie de la Cuesta is warmer than the rest of the department. As its name implies, San Rafael Pie de la Cuesta lies at the base of the Sierra Madre mountain range. There are many coffee plantations in the area.
