El Rabanal
El Rabanal (Spanish language, Spanish: ''Servidumbre de Conservación El Rabanal'') is a small, protected area consisting of 16 acres of critical secondary forest in the municipality of Cidra, Puerto Rico. The forest tract is located in barrio Rabanal, Cidra, Puerto Rico, Rabanal, in a 5,438-acre hydrological basin (El Banco Creek, important for the Río de la Plata (Puerto Rico), La Plata basin) which is home to 21 species of birds, seven out of which are endemic to the region, including the Plain pigeon, Puerto Rican plain pigeon (considered a symbol of Cidra). This protected area was established through the ''Asociación de Pequeños Agricultores de Rabanal Inc.'' (APARI) and the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust (''Para la Naturaleza'') in 2002 with the goal of protecting the area from urban development and developing educational programs related to sustainable agriculture and environmental education. Patagioenas Inornata Wetmorei
''Patagioenas'' is a genus of New World pigeons whose distinctness from the genus '' Columba'' was long disputed but ultimately confirmed. It is basal to the ''Columba''-''Streptopelia'' radiation. Their ancestors diverged from that lineage probably over 8 million years ago. Secondary Forest
A secondary forest (or second-growth forest) is a forest or woodland area which has re-grown after a timber harvest or clearing for agriculture, until a long enough period has passed so that the effects of the disturbance are no longer evident. It is distinguished from an old-growth forest (primary or primeval forest), which has not recently undergone such disruption, and complex early seral forest, as well as third-growth forests that result from harvest in second growth forests. Secondary forest regrowing after timber harvest differs from forest regrowing after natural disturbances such as fire, insect infestation, or windthrow because the dead trees remain to provide nutrients, structure, and water retention after natural disturbances. Cidra, Puerto Rico
Cidra () is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located in the central region of the island, north of Cayey; south of Comerío and Aguas Buenas; east of Aibonito and Barranquitas; and west of Caguas. Cidra is spread over 12 barrios and Cidra Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Río De La Plata (Puerto Rico)
The La Plata River ( es, Río de la Plata) is the longest river in Puerto Rico. It is located in the north coast of the island. It flows from south to north, and drains into the Atlantic Ocean about west of San Juan. The mouth of the river is a resort area with white sandy beaches. La Plata has a length of approximately 46 miles with its origin in the municipality of Guayama, Puerto Rico, at an altitude of approximately above sea level. Plain Pigeon
The plain pigeon (''Patagioenas inornata'') is a species of bird in the family Columbidae. It is found in the four Greater Antilles: Cuba, Hispaniola (in the Dominican Republic and Haiti), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. Its natural habitats are forest, woodland, coastal desert, mangrove and swampy areas. It is threatened by habitat loss and illegal hunting. Description The plain pigeon is a large-bodied bird (38 cm 5 in that superficially resembles the common city pigeon. At a distance it appears pale blue-gray overall. The head, hindneck, breast, and part of the folded wing are colored with a red-wine wash. When folded, the wing shows a white leading edge; in flight, it forms a conspicuous wing bar.
