El Cerrato
El Cerrato is a natural Comarcas of Castile and León, comarca in Spain comprising locations in the provinces of Palencia (province), Palencia, Burgos (province), Burgos and Valladolid (province), Valladolid, although the largest part lies within Palencia. With an area of 1,534 km2, almost 25,000 inhabitants and an average elevation of 783 meters above sea level, the region contains 37 villages and the city of Dueñas, Palencia, Dueñas. Its capitals throughout history have been Castroverde de Cerrato, Palenzuela and, from the late fifteenth century, Baltanás, the largest municipality. Etymology Some sources say that the name comes from the Latin cirratus, which gave the zerrato romance, with the meaning of "land dominated by rolling hills or cerrales". Other sources say it comes from the Latin serrare, in the sense of an enclosed area, fenced or cordoned off. A ''comarca'' (, or , or ) is a traditional region or local administrative division found in Portugal, Spain and some of their former colonies, like Brazil, Nicaragua, and Panama. The term is derived from the term ''marca'', meaning a March (territory), "march, mark", plus the prefix ''co''-, meaning "together, jointly". The ''comarca'' is known in Aragonese language, Aragonese as ''redolada'' () and in Basque language, Basque as ''eskualde'' (). In addition, in Galician language, Galician, ''comarcas'' are also called ''bisbarras'' (). Although the English word "county" and its near synonym "shire" have similar meanings, they are usually translated into Spanish and Portuguese as ''condado'', a term which in the Iberian peninsula only refers to regions historically ruled by a ''conde'' (count or earl).
