Ekwueme Square
Alex Ekwueme Square, widely known as Ekwueme Square, is the main square in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, Nigeria. It is located beside Anambra State House of Assembly's Complex and adjacent Federal High Court, Awka. It is named after Nigeria's first civilian Vice President, Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme. It has access roads leading to Anambra State Secretariat. History Ekwueme Square is used as the main venue for the Independence Day parade and the Swearing-in Ceremony of the Executive Governor of Anambra state. Since its completion, it has also hosted a number of political rallies, religious programmes, musical concerts, award ceremonies and sports events. Awka () is the capital city of Anambra State, Nigeria. The city was declared capital on 21 August 1991, after the creation of Anambra and Enugu state, which moved the capital from Enugu to Awka (an administrative center since pre.-colonial times). The city has an estimated population of 301,657 as of the 2006 Nigerian census, and over 2.5 million as of a 2018 estimate. The city is located at, by road, directly north of Port Harcourt in the centre of the densely-populated Igbo heartland in South East Nigeria. Alexander Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme (21 October 1932 – 19 November 2017) was the first elected Vice President of Nigeria from 1979 to 1983 during the Second Nigerian Republic serving under President Shehu Shagari as a member of the National People’s Party (NPP). Personal life Alex Ekwueme was born to Igbo parents in Oko Town, in present day Anambra State on 21 October 1932. He died at 10.00pm on Sunday 19 November 2017 at a clinic in London. He had to be flown there after his relapse to a coma which he fell into as a result of his fall in his Enugu residence. Education Ekwueme started primary school at the St John's Anglican Central School, at Ekwulobia, then he proceeded to King's College, Lagos.
