Eke Silversword
''Argyroxiphium caliginis'', the Eke silversword, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is found only in two Hawaiian tropical rainforest bogs in West Maui, Hawaii. Charles Noyes Forbes
Charles Noyes Forbes (1883–1920) was an American botanist who primarily worked on Hawaii. Biography Forbes was born in Boylston, Massachusetts on 24 September 1883.Occasional papers of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum of Polynesian Ethnology and Natural History. The family Asteraceae, alternatively Compositae, consists of over 32,000 known species of flowering plants in over 1,900 genera within the order Asterales. Commonly referred to as the aster, daisy, composite, or sunflower family, Compositae were first described in the year 1740. West Maui
The West Maui Mountains, West Maui Volcano, or Mauna Kahālāwai which means "holding house of water," is approximately 1.7 million years old and forms a much eroded shield volcano that constitutes the western quarter of Maui. Since its last eruption approximately 320,000 years ago, the West Maui Mountains have undergone substantial stream erosion. Silversword Alliance
The silversword alliance, also known as the tarweeds, refers to an adaptive radiation of around 30 species in the composite or sunflower family, Asteraceae. The group is endemic to Hawaii, and is derived from a single immigrant to the islands. For radiating from a common ancestor at an estimated 5.2±0.8 Ma, the clade is extremely diverse, composed of trees, shrubs, subshrubs, mat-plants, cushion plants, rosette plants, and lianas. ''Argyroxiphium'' is a small genus of plants in the family Asteraceae. Its members are known by the common names silversword or greensword due to their long, narrow leaves and the silvery hairs on some species.
