Einar Høiland
Einar Høiland (1907–1974) was a Norwegian meteorologist. Høiland was born in Farsund. He received his PhD in 1939. In 1947, he was a lecturer in aerodynamics and hydrodynamics at the University of Oslo, and from 1954, he was a professor at the university. In 1951 he established the Institute for Weather and Climate Research of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, that he led until 1960. There he built a scientific environment that fostered meteorological research in Norway. Høiland's primary interest was on the connection between hydrodynamics and thermodynamics, the stability of fluids, and the theory of lee waves. The Solberg-Høiland criteria for the stability of rotating thermally stratified flows are named after him and Halvor Solberg Halvor Solberg (5 February 1895 – 31 January 1974) was a Norwegian meteorologist. Farsund
is a municipality in Agder county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Lister. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Farsund. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters ( no, Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi, DNVA) is a learned society based in Oslo, Norway. Its purpose is to support the advancement of science and scholarship in Norway. History The Royal Frederick University in Christiania was established in 1811. Lee Waves
In meteorology, lee waves are atmospheric stationary waves. The most common form is mountain waves, which are atmospheric internal gravity waves. These were discovered in 1933 by two German glider pilots, Hans Deutschmann and Wolf Hirth, above the Krkonoše. They are periodic changes of atmospheric pressure, temperature and orthometric height in a current of air caused by vertical displacement, for example orographic lift when the wind blows over a mountain or mountain range. They can also be caused by the surface wind blowing over an escarpment or plateau, or even by upper winds deflected over a thermal updraft or cloud street. The vertical motion forces periodic changes in speed and direction of the air within this air current. They always occur in groups on the lee side of the terrain that triggers them. Halvor Solberg
Halvor Solberg (5 February 1895 – 31 January 1974) was a Norwegian meteorologist. He was born in Ringsaker. He was a central member of the Bergen School of Meteorology, working as meteorologist in Kristiania from 1918. His thesis ' was published in 1928. He was appointed professor at the University of Oslo from 1930 to 1964. In the 1930s he worked on the theory of tides, atmospheric waves and oscillations, and stability of gas and liquid flow. He was a fellow of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters from 1930, and served as secretary-general from 1946 to 1954.
