Ein Gedi Race
Ein Gedi race, also known as the ''Shalom Marathon – Dead Sea Half Marathon'' is an Israeli road running event held by the Tamar Regional Council since 1983. The starting point for all races is the Ein Gedi Spa, east of Jerusalem and 4 kilometers south of Kibbutz Ein Gedi. It is billed as the "lowest race on earth". History In 1997, the race was held in memory of Giora and Tomer Ron. The winner was Kenya's Bernard Boiya, with Morocco's Chaham el Matti coming in second. In 1999, the Palestinian Authority flag flew at the race as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. Since 2004, handcycling has grown in popularity at the race. In 2010, three runners were airlifted to hospitals after suffering heatstroke during the race. Tamar Regional Council
The Tamar Regional Council ( he, מועצה אזורית תמר, ''Mo'atza Ezorit Tamar'') is a regional council in Israel's Southern District, on the south and western edges of the Dead Sea along the Arava valley. The council was established in 1955 with the opening of lodging at Sodom near the Dead Sea Works, and its jurisdiction covers an area of 1,650 km2. The first council head was Yehuda Almog (Kopelivitch), who had lived in the area from 1934. The present Mayor of the Tamar Regional Council is Mr. Dov Litvinoff. The council today encompasses communal villages, agriculture, factories, tourist sites, and military and civilian installations. Ein Gedi Spa
Ein Gedi Spa was a wellness center along the Dead Sea, Israel, fed by the waters of the Dead Sea and is now permanently closed due to sinkholes that threaten the area. It provided health by the four elements of the area: water, air, sun, and mud. The spa had hot pools that are filled with sulphur water. It was previously a famous attraction on the shore of the Dead Sea. The spa was known for its unpleasant odor resulting from the sulphur springs. However, it still drew large crowds who believed in its health benefits. The spa was run by the Ein Gedi Kibbutz. Initially built directly along the shoreline of the Dead Sea, due to the sea's shrinkage, the spa was quite a distance from the lake due to ongoing evaporation of the Dead Sea. Ein Gedi ( he, עֵין גֶּדִי, ''lit.'' Kid Spring) is a kibbutz on the western shore of the Dead Sea in Israel. Located on the edge of the Judean desert at the site of historic Ein Gedi, it falls under the jurisdiction of Tamar Regional Council. In it had a population of .
