Egosoft GmbH (formerly Ego Software) is a German video game developer based in Würselen, Germany. The company was founded by Bernd Lehahn in 1988. ''X: Beyond the Frontier'' is a video game created by Egosoft for Windows. The first of the ''X'' series, it is a space trading and combat simulator game, mostly set in the fictional X-Universe. Upon release, it was frequently compared to the older Elite. An expansion, ''X-Tension'', was released in 2000. ''Ugh!'' is an arcade/flight game developed by Egosoft and published in 1992 by Play Byte for the Amiga, Commodore 64, and MS-DOS. It is a clone of the 1984 Commodore 64 game ''Space Taxi''. ''Ugh!'' was later distributed as shareware mainly via Bulletin Board Systems and magazine cover disks. Gameplay The game features a caveman who, in order to appeal to his beloved future mate, controls a stone-age muscle-powered helicopter, picking up passengers and flying them to the desired location for money. The player must venture through 69 levels, and must evade natural obstacles as well as hostile Dinosaurs and "Birds" (actually pterosaurs). Collisions with obstacles, hard landings and touching obstacles with the helicopter's rotor inflict damage to the helicopter. Rainbow Arts Software GmbH was a German video game publisher based in Gütersloh. The company was founded in 1984 by Marc Ullrich and Thomas Meiertoberens and acquired by Rushware in 1986. The company's decline began in the early 1990s: The distributor did not manage to cover the costs of selling the titles worldwide, while development costs were constantly rising. The Rainbow Arts name lost its notoriety since then. The parent companies Rushware and Softgold were in turn bought up by the American games manufacturer THQ in 1999.
