Egil H. Thomassen is a Norwegian aerophilatelist who was appointed to the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 2000. His collections have earned Large Gold medals at PACIFIC 97 and ISRAEL 98. Aerophilately is the branch of philately that specializes in the study of airmail. Philatelists have observed the development of mail transport by air from its beginning, and all aspects of airmail service have been extensively studied and documented by specialists. Scope The scope of aerophilately includes: *airmail postage stamps, both official and unofficial (see list of US airmail postage here) *other types of labels (such as airmail etiquettes) *postal documents transmitted by air * postal markings related to air transport *rates and routes, particularly first flights and other "special" flights *mail recovered from aircraft accidents and other incidents (crash covers) While most of the study of airmail assumes transport by fixed-wing aircraft, the fields of balloon mail, dirigible mail, zeppelin mail, missile mail, and rocket mail are active subspecialties. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists
The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. Selection of the signatories Those who have assisted the development of philately through their research, expertise or giving their time can be candidates to sign the Roll if they are sponsored by one of the existing signatories. A signature (; from la, signare, "to sign") is a handwritten (and often stylized) depiction of someone's name, nickname, or even a simple "X" or other mark that a person writes on documents as a proof of identity and intent. The writer of a signature is a signatory or signer. Similar to a handwritten signature, a signature work describes the work as readily identifying its creator. A signature may be confused with an autograph, which is chiefly an artistic signature.
