The Arrondissement of Tielt ( nl, Arrondissement Tielt; french: Arrondissement de Tielt) is one of the eight administrative arrondissements in the Province of West Flanders, Belgium. History The Arrondissement of Tielt was created in 1818 and originally comprised the cantons of Ruiselede and Tielt, which were ceded from the Arrondissement of Bruges, and the canton of Meulebeke, which was ceded from the Arrondissement of Kortrijk. In 1823, the Arrondissement of Torhout and Wakken ceased to exist and, as a result, a number of municipalities which had previously been a part of the Arrondissement of Torhout and the canton of Oostrozebeke were added to the arrondissement. Ferdinand Verbiest
Father Ferdinand Verbiest (9 October 1623 – 28 January 1688) was a Flemish Jesuit missionary in China during the Qing dynasty. He was born in Pittem near Tielt in the County of Flanders (now part of Belgium). He is known as Nan Huairen () in Chinese. He was an accomplished mathematician and astronomer and proved to the court of the Kangxi Emperor that European astronomy was more accurate than Chinese astronomy. He then corrected the Chinese calendar and was later asked to rebuild and re-equip the Beijing Ancient Observatory, being given the role of Head of the Mathematical Board and Director of the Observatory.
